Materials that can be mailed to prisoners?

I wanted to confirm that if I wanted to letter write (paper) to a prisoner, I simply mail to their address listed on the site and hope for a response, and the pen pal friendship grows from that.

Also, I saw that books are prohibited to be mailed, is that correct? Just checking, because I have a close friend (not part of writeaprisoner.com) in Soledad prison and occasionally send him a book if he requests. I've also sent him stamps / envelopes / paper as needed for correspondence.
