Default Received a reply from a different person

I wrote to someone on death row a while back , I received a reply yesterday which had 2 letters one from the person I wrote to saying they couldn't write to me as they had so much mail recently and the other letter was from a different person asking if I would like to write to them , how are inmates on dr able to pass on letters to other inmates ? I thought they had no contact with each other? Does this happen often ?

Inmates will ALWAYS find a way to communicate with eachother. Besides, I've written with someone on Nevada DR for a while and over there they have some sort of general population, where the DR inmates are out of their cells for the majority of the day. Or , at least, so I'm told.

I think it is very kind of your DR person to let you know that he's gotten too much mail, and it is also nice of him to think of someone that maybe has no one to write to. I'd give it a try.

Inmates are very sly and they always find a way to communicate with each other. For the guy you wrote to first, I think he was kind to answer you and tell you he can not accept new penpals. It's rare that happens. But me personally I will not answer the other guy at least that you have the same hobbies, interests in common. It's you who decides in the end.

I recently married my pen pal. Totally different subject. However. When we became involved he decided that he was dedicating so much time to me that he did not have time or the desire to take on anyone else, so he played matchmaker, he got a letter from a woman who was a veteran, one of his friends in there is a veteran, he wrote her, explained his situation, gave her info on his friend and gave her his address (with his permission) he offered to write her still. She wrote his friend, and they have been writing back and forth regularly now. She occasionally writes my husband, which I have no issues with, he tells me about it and sends me the letters sometimes because she is asking about things I could help with. So he occasionally gets a letter and if he can find a good match, he writes them and explains he's married now, he married his own pen pal, but that he thinks so & so could really use someone to write to them as they get no mail. He never gives out their addresses, sometimes the guys include a letter with his and he leaves it up to fate. These guys look out for each other, not all of them can afford the cost of an ad, some guys have found the perfect pen pal, but the ad is paid so they leave it up and help out their friends who would otherwise be invisible. C's veteran friend is so happy now. He had no one right now. His own mother won't even speak to him and he's only in his late 20's with life. And he's a sweetheart. He definitely needed a friend, and to find one who also served in the same war has been a God send.

I just thought it strange how he was able to pass on my info then get both letters sent as I didn't realise they could find ways of communicating as they are dr .. I have a lot to learn ! anyway it's happened and this surprise letter has a lot written, he seems like someone I do share common interests with but he said he didn't want to write to anyone until he read what I had written , that makes me wonder ... I'm a cautious person generally and question everything but I will give him the benefit of the doubt and write to him , see how it goes
    Thank you

The benefits of communicating through letters is that, if necessary, you can end it at any given moment. If you feel uncomfortable with what your penpal is writing, you can just call it a day and move on. Just keep being cautious and look for any red flags. I hope that this new person and you will have an amazing connection and will be able to build a long lasting friendship.

Prisoners in seg and on DR communicate and share stuff all the time. Prison 101: fishing. You pass notes, letters, bags of coffee, books, magazines, etc. by way of trading it by attaching to 'fishlines' (usually thread taken out of clothing or bedding) and throwing/sliding it under other prisoners' doors. Prisoners also talk to one another if they're neighbors -- it's not as if they live on another street -- or they yell through air vents or toilets.

Prisoners in seg or on DR are also routinely in possession of contraband -- even cell phones. How do they get them there? It's not as if they live in a bubble. CO's are the source of contraband in such settings.

This guy passing on another guy's letter to you is one of the most benign things that can happen in that situaiton of exchange. It speaks well of him. And yes, DR guys often have a lot of people writing them, so you should definitely not take it personally.
