    Default unauthorized login attempt

    Dear Andi,

Someone has tried to log into your account on WriteAPrisoner.com - Prison Forum with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 79.240.102.130

Could you please check check to see if this is a current member? Thank you.

Such things are easy to check, but won't show up on the database here, since many use dynamic IPs. That is: they change each time a person logs onto the Internet. However, should you wish to follow a lead and see if it helps you: https://whoisip.ovh/79.237.102.130

I've had a few of these too, I am sure several other people have. I also get them constantly on the several web sites I control, sometimes they are bots, sometimes brute force attacks, fortunately they are rarely successful, since most of us - including here - know how important security is. They try, they see it doesn't work, they get blocked, they move on elsewhere and often don't come back. This is our online life.

Why would anyone want to get into someone's wap profile?

Oh, it's not just the one profile: the idea is to break into a real profile absolutely anywhere and then use it for spam. Sometimes hackers try to create a profile and spam through that profile, which can lead to an IP being blocked and is then useless to them, or they try with a profile which has been around for a while. When you're looking at twenty-eight thousand profiles on a site like this, the chances of a random name coming up are quite good, especially a simple one. They try, mostly they fail, then they go elsewhere. probably a few other people - who are not active - have had the same message. Not so long ago this site was constantly being checked before a log in was allowed...

I have about ten different domains on my server and deal with several hundred attempts to break in (brutal attack) or log in without the correct password every day. This can be in the form of an attempt at the user name and password (such as the name admin), or an attempt to gain access to the back-end of a domain or server, such as the configuration files, or an upload file set on an insecure plug in.

If you're interested in knowing how much an IP address can reveal about you, take a look at this: https://www.whatismyip.com/ or this: https://www.iplocation.net/find-ip-address to see how mjch information is available about your computer and its connection.

Mine, for example, shows that I am logging in through Verden in northern Germany, use Mozilla Firefox 53 on a Windows 7 OS with connection through t-ipconnect at 79.244.108.97. An insecure laptop or computer would allow even more information to be shown, which most people show anyway as soon as they give certain applications permission to access their smart phone - such a photographs, contacts, location, documents and so on.

I don't think id want to know, I've all ready got a band aid over my laptop camera, because I read some where people can look at you without you knowing. I don't do important stuff online, like banking. I don't really share photos. So if anyone wants to rummage around my stuff that's fine lol.

Oh, sometimes it's other people who do the sharing, and the tagging, which you don't get to see.

Yes, covering the camera is a good idea, there are harmless software programs which can beat some virus machines and turn your camera on without you knowing it. Even our highly specialised friend Mark Zuckerberg covers his. But you can also do a Google on your name, your address, your telephone number, your postcode, your car license plate, your e-mail and see what size footprint you have. Mine goes back to the early Nineties.

Sometimes it is an advantage to have a common name.
