    Default Gooddog...

I was in Dundee today here in Scotland and Dalai Lama was there....there was a lot of police presence and he was greeted with a piper and there were lots and lots of people.

It made me think of you. It was a piper on his own it was really good. I never really got near because there was a lot of people there but I hope his visit was a good one.

Dundee - Dalai Lama in Scotland

Hey! For some reason I totally missed this post, sorry about that but thank you for putting it on here! Yeah, he came to Portland once- more than a rockstar. Shut down the entire downtown core, had to, people filled all the streets! I saw this orange clad figure in the distance and heard "glug glug glug" over the PA system, that was about it, but I was glad to go anyhow just to see the response to him.

What's really funny about it is that I've heard him talk about this response to himself. One of my favorite Dalai Lama quotes:

interviewer: "Your Holiness, it seems that everywhere you go, people would like to meet you, touch you, have a piece of you. How do you feel about that?"
Dalai Lama: "Well I don't know why they do that, I'm just sitting here."

Just sitting there explaining how to live side by side with chaos, pain, those who'd wish to destroy you (like China wishes for Tibet) and STILL come with compassion and loving kindness. Yep, he's just sitting there! Wish we would all just sit there like that!

    thanks, fee

*and look at his fantastic plaid blessing scarf!

The Dalai Lama visited my neighbourhood on his second-last visit to Australia. He was driven right past my house. (There is a Tibetan Buddhist temple on my street.) He came into my Church (on the same street), and knelt with us as we were praying.

That was the genesis of the inter-faith dialogue that has grown up here. The Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Caodai leaders meet for lunch once a month.

I think it was totally for real. That was definitely him and just a goofy newscaster trying to be funny. What's so great is how he SO didn't get it, which pointed out how incredibly stupid the joke was, and then he just laughs in this "ok, whatever it is, it's funny" way.

He's recently done a very smart thing. He is considered the spiritual and political leader of Tibet, as all the Dalai Lamas have been. But now, he's getting old, knows they will find a new Dalai Lama after he dies and he wants them to be smarter about this political problem with China, so he's taking himself out as the political leader and leaving that up to a type of political cabinet. That way when he dies, the cabinet will be in place in case China wants to make a sweeping move against Tibet. Meanwhile, they can find their new Dalai Lama to be the spiritual leader in the traditional way but the political factor will be in place. He's taking care of his people before he dies, in this way.

I highly reccomend his books. There is a brilliant film based on his life called Kundun, also highly reccomend, but it's quite gut wrenching, especially the treatment of the Tibetean people by the Chinese.
