Congress to pass bill to release non violent offenders early?
I am sorry for my ignorance, but I am just confused.
My PP was telling me that a bill is to be presented to congress at the first of 2010 to release non violent offenders early due to over crowding of prisons?
Is the going to be nation wide?Or is it only in California? Does it have a good chance of passing?
Any information anyone would like to share would be much appreciated.Thank you..

Have not heard anything about this yet but it seems logical to me. IMHO, probably most of these are drug related charges and hopefully they have gone through NA or AA before release.

Hope it is not a rash of throw them out to the streets, see if they have family to help and go to for support or at least to a state funded rehab or whatever will help depending on individual needs.
I do not think every prison or state has this problem though?

I know New Mexico is releasing up to 700 inmates and closing 2 prisions.

I know California is terrible. They are housing inmates in the gym and outside in tents!Well they arent keeping Charlie Manson outside or anything lol. It's just minimum security inmates being kept outside. From what my PP said it also has to do with the state of California being broke and out dated sentencing laws.Maybe it is just California.I will have to ask him.Anywho,I was just trying to get an idea of when he may get out

Re: Congress to pass bill to release non violent offenders early?
I read somewhere today that it is very unlikely congress will get anything done with early release and changing some laws to benefit the non violent ones. The only way anything will get done by congress or your state legislators is for everyone to send emails to them. If they get enough people pestering, they might get off their duffs and do something. Senator Webb introduced a proposal to have a Congressional committee to research federal laws (and many impact our state laws), in an effort to make necessary changes to law, sentencing and prison that would benefit our inmates, and Congress hasn't done a thing about it. When I email them I have a way to save time. I write out what I want to say and include my name, state, and email address and copy it. Then as I go to their email address, I just paste it and only have to add a header.
