This comment, gives me hope......such stupidity and as was said 98% attributed to alcohol.

Father Riley believes a mix of early intervention and service provision can work. He says when Youth Off the Streets built a $7.4 million drop-in centre in Macquarie Fields, the crime rate fell by 40 per cent. ''I wish I'd gotten to this kid [Loveridge] sooner. All kids want is a connection. When you connect a kid you can turn them around.''

I have a great deal of respect for Fr Chris Riley and Youth Off the Streets. But that organisation is selective about who they will help. Gay, lesbian and trannie kids are not within their "Target moiety". In my neighbourhood there are two organisations working with kids, who do not discrimate: Rosemount (Good Shepherd Sisters) and Exodus Foundation (Uniting Church).

While i think Father Riley does a great job with ALL kids as you have shared, your right, he is not specific to the needs of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) kids. I would assume those working with kids at risk would seek further support from those organisations that do target their specific needs as you suggested above, including his.

I used to assume that too; but' in Sydney at least, inter-agency consultation between NGOs is a rare thing.

There are two NGOs - The 'brown sisters' (Our Lady's Nurses for the Poor) and the 'opposition' (The Isidore Goodman Trust) who serve as everyone else's "too hard" basket.

It was the part about basically knowing many people on facebook but not knowing/ caring about your neighbours enough to not plat your music at 2am ( sorry, i can't do the copy and paste thingy) that struck a chord with me.
Slighty off topic but i grew up in an apartment building with roughly 80 flats in it. Everyone knew everyone, we had many impromtu picnics and games on the back grass. My dad still lives there, he probably knows the inhabitants of maybe 10 flats now. I grew up with respect for my neighbours, not just because thats what i was taught but because i knew them! !!

ACON has its hands more than full with its "core objectives", and have been forced to downsize. Children and young people are slipping through the cracks at an alarming rate. Many small, faith-based organisations are picking up the slack, but most are ill-equipped to do so.
