A judge in the US told a Utah mother to cut off her daughter's pony tail in order to secure a lesser sentence for the 13-year-old.

Kaytlen Lopan appeared in juvenile court after she and an 11-year-old friend cut the hair of a three-year-old girl they met at a McDonald's in Price, Utah, the Deseret News reports.

District Juvenile Judge Scott Johansen sentenced Kaytlen to serve 30 days in detention, pay damages to the victim and serve 276 hours of community service at a May 28 hearing.

So tell me why would this land in a courtroom wasting valuable time and resources? Do parents not know how to resolve and punish their own children these days?

Some people seem to think that anything their kids do is OK. This wasn't just a simple hair cutting, it was an assault on a three year old. Should a court be involved? Absolutely! And, I think that the thirteen year old got off lightly. NOW is the time for her to learn a lesson . . before she starts a reign of violence against other people. I just hope that her mother got a piece of the action too. Why didn't her teen aged daughter know any better?

Totally agree and I commend the judge for thinking of such a creative punishment that will stick with her.

Honestly that whole thing is really pathetic. What next? it really is a total waste of money...that wouldnt happen here at all.

I don't know if it's a waste of money. Bullying has gotten to the point where we've got to start doing something about it. Maybe if we start showing kids consequences when they are this young some won't be inclined to commit adult crimes. When I was caught shoplifting at 13 and they threatened me with jail (which they never would of done at that time) it sure made a bigger impact on me that if my parents had just grounded me or took away privileges, which happened too.

I think its a good way of teaching the girl exactly how it feels to have her hair cut off. She might actually learn something from this. It was a 3 year old little girl they did this too its not right.

I'm kind of on the fence about this. I do think it's rather ridiculous that this had to be brought to COURT but the reality is that some parents have no control over their own kids and if you want some sort of resolution, this is the only way to go. If it was my 3 year old whose hair I had never even cut as her mother, you can bet I'd be damn p!ssed that some stupid little b!tch teenyboppers had done it without my consent. And depending on the mother, you can probably not trust her to actually teach the girl something. I personally think that cutting the pony tail was a fitting sentence and I'm not the "eye for an eye" type, but that I bet that little girl learned her lesson.
