    Default The Oregon Five

Check this out! More of that crazy juvenile sentencing...
Not that these are choir boys but still, seems like they need to get their laws straight in this state. Juvenile sentencing always hits close to home for me because of my pp, sentenced with no end in sight, at 15. Yes, they do crimes and crimes need to be punished but there needs to be some sanity in sentencing.

The "Oregon Five" were under age 17 when they committed their horrific crimes. At the time, Oregon law didn't address how to handle these younger aggravated murderers. So, in 1999, Oregon's Commission on Prison Terms wrote a specific set of rules for them.

I have a question: Aggravated. What does that mean? I have looked in many dictionaries and encyclopaedias. Nothing comes clear. Is it a term specific to the USA legal system? If so, why does none of Webster, American Heritage or Funk and Wagnall's address it. ??????????????

Here is the legal definition pertaining to Oregon. Every state will interperate this differently. (naturally.)

    Aggravated Murder

    Aggravated Murder
Thank you. I'm beginning to understand the terminology, but the logic still escapes me.

How can the murder of a police officer be considered a more heinous crime than the murder of a little old lady?

I might be wrong about how I phrase this but I believe in some states that is known as capitol murder as in, a capitol or DP case, to kill a police officer. Guess it's meant to show deference to the station of authority. I probably didn't explain that too well. You or I might not see that one of those lives is more important to the other but I guess they mean it as a heirarchy of serious nature of the crime. Supposed to send a message.

Sounds like bullshyt. Smells likes bullshyt. Behaves like bullshyt. So there's a 90% chance that it is bullshyt.

There are a couple of police officers in this state that I'd happily kill, and not have to go to confession afterwards. Little old ladies are another thing.
I still can't conceive why the state would view killing a scumbag cop as a worse crime than killing an innocent bystander.

Twaddle. It makes me very sad that a movie, loosely based on historical events and characters, has more impact on us than history itself.

Right... keep everyone in line by making that crime more serious than a "regular" murder. I guess that's the thinking, anyhow. Don't know if it's ever stopped a single murder of a police officer.
