Default Premature Baby Born At Dawson Jail Without Medically Trained Personnel

"DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – CBS 11 has learned a baby was prematurely born last month at the Dawson Jail in downtown Dallas, apparently with no medically trained personnel in attendance.

    The baby lived four days.

In an exclusive interview with CBS 11, Doctor Owen Murray, Vice President of Offender Health Services at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, said there is no state requirement to have medically trained personnel at Dawson between 5 p.m. and 5 a.m., which was the period in which A.M. gave birth to her daughter, Gracie."

    seriously??

That is such a very tragic and sad turn of events. I could see why no Doctor was present at the facility at that time, but to say no medical staff were in attendance?? She was taken down to medical on a stretcher, where at the very least they would of had a nurse in attendance you would think but said this one was head of the unit, so i would think she would be an RN?? How can you be head of a unit if not an RN?? Anyway, the Dr was on a teleconference call but for what ever reason the attending "unit manager" was told he was not required, so while he knew about her condition did not go in to see her personally.

What i do not understand is why no bloods nor urine test were done on ADMISSION into the facility? I thought that was the norm? Why was the REQUESTED pregnancy test not available and as for the attending CO's i can only wonder if any of them had had kids before? Then again i was given two pain killers and told to go home when i fronted at the hospital believing i was in labour. I made a stand and refused to leave knowing the signs. Needless to say i was nursing my daughter within the hour. I'm just so sorry no one listened to this young lady, because more than likely her baby "Gracie" would be alive today if given proper treatment and care of not only mother but child.

I tell you what, i would be making sure a few people were held accountable.

This is horribly tragic. At most prisons and jails pregnancy testing is standard practice. And a RN had to work the clinic at all times. However they did not like us sending inmates out unless we spoke with a doctor first. However if we couldn't get him or her on the phone we used our own discretion and sent them out. When we worked the clinic we all had to be trained in CPR for infants children and adults. You also had to utilize your skills, but also be able to use proper judgement when something goes beyond your scope of practice and you need outside help. She should have been given emergent care stat. I would rather a simple write up and just chance sending her and her baby to the hospital where they could have at the llest monitored her and the baby. this really toots my horn because it's so unnecessary. I really hope they pay for this.
