It was 99 when I was visiting weekend before last. According to my iphone app it has been 108 where my man is for several days now.

He keeps cool (or tries to) by lying on the concrete floor in his boxers with the fan blowing over him. He's used to the heat but it gets ridiculous in that unit.

One friend in seg does this, but still shares he finds it so stuffy, like he is at times being cooked alive with little ventilation. I cannot imagine being let out for an hour a day under those conditions, even knowing his actions landed him there.

I'm pretty sure seg has A/C. R has A/C and they'll turn it on when it gets bad (because the COs have to walk around in big ol' vests do the heat is horrible on them). When it's not on he'll strip to his boxers and let the fan blow.

Just remember - the guys can strip down to their boxers. The COs still have to wear those uniforms.

Depends on the unit. Some units have A/C in the visitation rooms, and some newer ones have A/C in parts of the unit (and Estelle has A/C on the medical wing), but older places have none. And they wont get any either, it is not a priority for anyone and would be hugely expensive to install in those old units - when TDCJ has chronic understaffing levels, there are more important things to focus on.

Inmates get access to ice and water, and they tend to break the windows at Coffield and other older units when it gets hot to increase ventilation. Those windows then get fixed by the window crews during the winter. Coffield is known as the Glasshouse, because the housing sections are ground to roof glass directly opposite the cells.

My man's unit has A/C in the visitation room and it was freezing in there. The two of us were shivering and he wished he'd worn his thermals.

I was wondering whether it would be possible to have some sort of solar powered cooling system. Heck knows they get enough sun!

My "man" told me that they sometimes put cold water on their floors and lay in it.

My favorite PP told me that at Mountain View (for women), the COs kept the AC cranked up so high that she almost had to wear her long undies in the summer time. LOL But, I know how hot it can get in Texas. Leave your windshield uncovered, in a parked car, and you can't hold onto the steering wheel without leather gloves, when you get back. Prior to getting the AC, though, my PP also told of sleeping on the concrete floor, to keep cool. But, she also covered herself with wet towels. The evaporation helped in keeping it cooler. What fun!

Probably not for the people that have to live in these conditions. My pen pal has written that they JUST got ice water in Polunsky and that he has personally witness people dying from heat stroke. Unacceptable.
