Oh, I think it is too. I don't even know what one looks like but I would assume it has a cord and has a heating element. I've seen what kind of weapons they can make from everyday ordinary items that you would think would be safe for them to have.

    TDCJ inmates can't.

That's the exact reason they are allowed to have the hot-pots, and why it is a major case if an inmate is found to have tampered with any item of property at all. The hot pots don't heat liquid to anywhere near the point of boiling, they just warm it enough to make a passable cup of instant coffee or warm through a food pouch (similar to military ration pouches).

Inmates don't need flat screen TVs though. Not sure they need TVs at all really, as long as they do have access to radio and newspapers.

I think I saw an episode of something where they fiddled with the thing to make it boil water. I imagine since it was on TV that they didn't have it for very long though! LOL

Maybe in other states, but not in TDCJ.

I doubt they get hotter than hair dryers or curling tongs - both of which are allowed in women's units in Texas.

Actually I did read that women can have hair dryers and curling irons which surprised me the most. They can get pretty hot but they probably aren't running around the common areas with them.
