Whoa... this was a new one. 've talked to my friend during loudness and issues on his end but not this: this morning we were talking and I could tell he was distracted which usually means some crap is happening on his end. I heard it get loud and he said: "Some guy is flipping out and they are about to mace him so if I have to lay on the ground, I gotta go..."

Ummmm..... it's not like I think he's living in a boy scout camp or anything but sometimes it just really hits home in a visceral way where he's at. It's not that often that you're talking to a friend on the phone and they say, "so sorry, someone's getting maced, gotta go..."

It made me a bit sad that for him; it was just an interuption to his call rather than anything to make him go He's used to it. Very used to it. It's only me that feels shocked to hear such things in person! It's more like he was just irritated with the guy.

He goes: "some people can't man up and handle lock down and they flip out." Lots of disdain in his voice for the guy. Weird. Guess it's apoint of pride to be able to handle certain things??? I don't know. Whatever it is, it would crumble me like a cookie in 5 seconds flat.

It's that I totally forget he's in prison sometimes when we're talking like any friends would... and then, I am reminded once again!

Ah that sucks. And yeah the letters tend to make us forget, even momentarily, where we are writing to.

About his disdain, it does not surprise me that much. For many guys there, being strong or at least trying to be is what keep them sane and what makes them get up in the morning. And I'm sure it was probably that kind of disdain you have for something you're afraid of. Like HE doesn't want to go mental like this guy so he shows disdain.

TOTALLY. I think you really nailed it on the head. I couldn't have said it that well but that's it. He's being weak, so he's a joker causing problems for the rest. Actually, thank you for that. I never want to look at him like he's just some hard guy who doesn't have compassion for others. It's the prison life. Got to be that way. I get it.

Ah well at least it's very probable. I know my PP always says in that prison either you lose your mind or you become tough. It doesn't mean they are heartless, just that they don't let themselves have meltdowns very often, because basically only a certain state of mind can make them stand life in prison. And mine's a lifer so he knows what he's talking about I guess...

It really does hit home sometimes. I've had NJ write to me "My eyes are watering. They're using mace in the cell next door but it's going through the air vents. I was having breakfast and it just came in. I have to put my shirt over my face. Okay, I have to stop writing for now, it's too bad on my eyes. I'll be back when it goes down a bit". I was just like.. "wow". I couldn't imagine sitting somewhere and having my eyes water because of mace being used nearby :S

Its quite sad when they say that eh? K has said it to me a couple of times...he gets pissed off because someone right at the end of the row could get sprayed but he still feels the effects of it. One time he was walking down the stairs and it must have been all over the rail he got that in his eyes. Sad.

The fact that inmates would get mace in their eyes from the guards spraying other inmates never even occured to me. Just another reason for my pen pals to be depressed, and for me to hate the pigs with every fiber of my being.

Of course, I'm sure most of the people on here will still insist their pen pals are happy and absolutely love being pepper sprayed. After all, pepper spray is just a food product!

Nope mine doesnt love it. Does anyone? It sure doesnt depress him though more like pisses him off. He I guess is used to it happening in there and if someone gets sprayed kinda close to his cell he goes under the covers in his bed so he doesnt breath it in.
