What's the MOJO behind a letter?

So while we are conversing and exchanging meaningful conversation about dealing with incarcerated people, I been wanting to dialogue about the following:
What is it about a letter written by a perfect stranger,,,site unseen in the flesh that can reel us in so fast and hard?
Are there any phsycologists on board who can dissect this and give a diagnosis?
OK off the record ANYONE care to explain why a letter can make us go postal, stalk the mail man and literally ruin our whole day if that letter does not come?
Whats behind the mojo of the written word from an inmate?

Re: What's the MOJO behind a letter?
You are so right. Everyday I go to the mailbox saying this to myself: Ok, now, self, don't be disappointed if there's no letter........ but it never works! I'm always bummed if there isn't a letter. Maybe it's the anticipation that makes us kooky.

Re: What's the MOJO behind a letter?
Letters like "a diary", can open up better once trust is built to the things we hold inside.
Sure is nice to "look forward to" a letter in the mail instead of bills, and normal stuff, to look forward to not dread, or routine.
Letters are like a good book, or good movie your feel you are there and a part of whats going on, also like a book or movie that is "to be continued", it leaves one waiting to see what will be said or happen next. "Apprehension", if long time writing worry if time schedule goes off, something is wrong as you would with any friend who just slacks off all of a sudden.
The "intrigue" of that stranger while getting to know, which as time goes maybe with some soon, they may become the "perfect" stranger, seems they fill all the things you like and like to hear.
If both are being open and honest over time, you learn more about the inside and what makes the other tick so to speak.
Why one writes to begin with is an individual thing could be many reasons, lonelness, curiousity, the need to feel one is helping another soul, actually looking for love, bored time on the hands on what to do that does not take alot of your time and money. Family member went to prison, write them now associate with others inside, and look to sites as this.
Why they can reel us so fast, we do not have to deal with the reality of in your face, the situation they are in brings emotional, body mannerism do not distract us from what is being said, we can back up and reread it. No Distractions' of the world not around us to feel more and react less going on while getting to know them, who they are. Of course as stated a good love story or friendship to be continued. 'Excitment"
This book can be put down when angry/tired/busy/etc, not like real life.

Re: What's the MOJO behind a letter?
After 2-3 letters I remember thinking: "wow, it's really easy to open up to this person because the chances are soooo slim that we will ever meet."

A hand-written letter is something that someone had to create with a pen and paper. What you see is what you get.
And no, i do not want a penpal. And if I did have one, he would never be able to read my handwriting. It looks like a couple of chickens got loose on paper with graphite on their feet.

I'm curious. What attracts you to a pp site when you don't correspond at all? Are you curious about what we do? or do you just like to explore your mind?
