    Default Info on Ads

    Hi,

This is a question I've been meaning to ask and if I go off topic and it's unwelcome please do say - but I was thinking the other day about the ads on WAP - quite often the crimes they are listed for differ - like DUI, DWI etc, and often the spelling is as bad as mine...

Is the information checked by anyone? Could a WAP ad claim that the person committed a crime that is different from the truth?

Hope your all doing good xx

(Taken from the FAQ on WAP's main page):

Why do you post the inmates' crime on their ad, and is this information verified?

We post the crimes so that pen pals have full disclosure about the person they are writing. This information is supplied directly by the inmate. In some cases, the crime cannot be posted pending legal endeavors with the inmate’s case. However, this is very rare, and information can always be obtained by contacting the Department of Corrections directly. The crime we place is generic and rarely includes specific offenses. Its purpose is to give the viewer an idea of the crime. However, for full disclosure, viewers are encouraged to login to the DOC site using the link provided on each inmate’s profile.

This tells me that the information on the ads is solely based on what the inmate discloses and that the information is not checked by WAP. Considering the amount of ads they have, I think I can understand why it's not checked...

I know that if a person has multiple charges sometimes they may only list one and it is the lesser charge of all.

    Caveat emptor !!

I saw an ad on another penpal site .. the guy claims he was born in '74 but his IDOC record says '54. His penpal ad conveniently lacks a photo. >:-)

He has a long history of crimes and he was first sentenced in '79 ... when he was 5 years old ??

All my pp's think that everyones crime should be checked for WAP and that all information should be given so a person can know all the details of that pp before writing to them.

Interesting that they think like that.

Some states have the inmate information online for you to check. I'm sure WAP has a link somewhere on the site.

Just as people in the "normal" world can minimize their negative qualities when writing a singles ad, so do inmates. Even if the inmate tells the truth, sometimes they can be less than clear about their offense. With the ladies, it is common to see some of them say, "I've gotten myself into a little trouble." I like the ones that say they stand for old time family values, and then you find out that they're guilty of kidnapping or murder. Others will create a different impression that is not a straight-faced lie, but is still certainly misleading. I've seen some that detail the kind of man for whom they are looking, and discuss what they would like to do with them when they get out. Then you find they're in for life without parole.

Even if the inmates were "lily-white" before they went into prison, they've likely had to learn to lie or to conceal information to survive. Twere it me, I'd just take their information with a grain of salt until it was confirmed. In the world we live in today, where people run criminal background checks on potential dates, inmates are starting to look better all the time.

I'd forgotten to add that learning about prison sentences is an education in itself. For instance, in Texas, life=60 years. So there are degrees of severity to the offense and to the sentence.

Just out of curiousity whats a good way to research your PP. I have looked on their particular doc site but sometimes they arent very descriptive. I have also tried google but nothing ever comes up other than a link to their page here on WAP. I think I have a few honest PP that I can believe but I am still curious.

You could try a "State v. ------ " search. That should come up with any appeals that he/she has filed, and the decisions rendered.
