    Default Jitter advice?

I just found this site and I have never even thought about writing to an inmate until today and I am a bit nervous. I love to write and I know that words can uplift and inspire and everyone around me thinks that it's a horrible idea but its something i want to do. Anyway, I know most of you are familiar with this process and I was wanting to know what youre experiences so far have been. Do you ever have the fear of contacting someone who is unstable and may one day get out and track you down? Do you use your real name or address?? Sorry if i may sound naive or overly cautious but these are things I wonder about. Any advice is helpful. Thanks

I was scared too, so I think that's normal. (Not that I'm one to talk about "normal" *L*)

Mostly it's been a great experience. Out of the 10 or so that I have written, only one turned out to be trouble and I no longer write to him.

I use a post office box (but then, that's my normal address -- none of my mail comes here to the apartment), and the general consensus is to use one rather than give your physical address.

I also use my real name, but some use an alias, or their first name and last initial or vice versa.

Welcome to WAP and mail man stalking.

    Welcome to WAP Bluerainbow.
When I was thinking to write,I was a little worried at first too.It is important to do some research on the person you want to write. Also go with your gutfeeling.
I have very nice penpals and I am very glad that I started writing.
I use my real name and my Home address, but I also live in canada.I think it would be a good idea to start with a PO Box,till you know your Penpals.
    Good luck to you.

Poll question. Do you pick someone from your state so you could easily visit if you wanted to OR out of state so there's distance between you?

Thanks u guys. I appreciate the welcome and advice and found the whole mail man stalking thing hilarious lol. Thats a good idea about going with your first name and last initial. I think i can deal with that. Whats funny is i said outloud this morning to God(at least thats who im assuming heard me lol) asking that if this was a good idea to send me a sign such as hearing about writing to prisoners within the next few days. An hour later Oprah came on at 11am for some odd reasn and her show was about prisoners and the power of writing and about how they need support too. lol I guess theres my sign!

Bluerainbow... Don't you just love "signs"? *L* Seems like every time I ask for one I get hit over the head with it.

Shizzel -- I didn't pick based on state at all, just on who seemed interesting, who "clicked" when I read the ad.

    Welcome to WAP Bluerainbow!
I am an overseas penpal, and I do use my own name and home addy.
I picked out who I wanted to write to, pretty well by pure gut instinct. I liked his ad! We are still writing after a couple of years so I guess my first instinct was correct.
I thought I was a "woman of the world" and knew everything, when I started out on the ppp experience. Well, I soon found out I was very wrong about that!
My experiences with writing to ppp`s have been postive; humbling; annoying; joyful, and sad. And every other emotion in between.
I would not have wanted to miss out of any of them!
    Happy writing.

listen, i have been writing different men in prison, from different states and countries, although i have a loving boyfriend in prison, he understands that everyone needs someone to talk to, to make them happy with the time they have left, now i have a lot of people in prison and i would call them my FRIENDS in a HEART BEAT, and not think twice about it. i love writing them and they love writing me. it is to just let them have some company. so if you are willing to take the time to get to know some one then go for it, you do not have to tell them anything that you do not want them to know. so go ahead and have fun. there are some really great men out there for you.

welcome Bluerainbow, I was fearful on my first letters also, when the first reply came (I write four) it was always friendly with a warm welcome and I still am writing the four and it has been mths and going great, I use a P.O box with my real name. I picked who I liked in the ad and not by state, all 4 are in different states. As I think it was felines post, in a good way it is a roller coaster ride of emotions, Funny, humbling, sad, sweet, positive and yes sometimes annoying, LOL, and then also kicks in the hot flashes and heavy breathing stalking the postman and hating week-ends and holidays, waiting for that letter, you will also find people around you find you acting a bit loco" and maybe someday whether you believe it or not visiting them and going thru the nervous breakdown on the first visit, putting all these small inconvenices aside you are actually finding your having a blast, even if some thing you have gone off the deep end, lots of good adice and support here when those times come. Enjoy!
