Default why (not who) do you write?

i am not asking who you write, but why do you come here? why did you choose a prisoner? whats your story? maybe this will help some newbies come out of their shell, and it can kinda be a get to know you.

My story seems to be quite common and it all began with Susan Smith, in South Carolina. About a year ago, there were lengthy newspaper articles about Ms. Smith getting as many as 700 letters, a day, because of an ad placed on WriteAPrisoner.com. I think that there may have been even more than one article and there was a big debate about the pros and cons of writing to prisoners and whether they deserved a little compassion or if they were total misfits who deserved every bit of punishment that they got.
This all got me to thinking about what it would be like, confined to a small cell for endless hours and never recieving any mail. That was more than I could take. I started searching, both here, on WAP, and elsewhere. After two unsuccessful tries, I finally found the one I was searching for. She is in her 60s and is in for Capital Murder, with a parole review scheduled in 2039, at age 102.
I have learned that in some ways her prison is not as bad as I had imagined, but in other ways it is worse than I could have ever imagined. I have also come to the conclusion that my PP is not a misfit, but rather a nice human being, who may have merely been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Further discussion may shed more light on that issue.
It has been a very rewarding experience. She is well educated and was hoping against hope for a decent person to hear her plea for a friend.
She is in Texas and I am in Michigan. I also have a wife who frowns on me fraternizing with prisoners. So, I don't know what my chances are of ever visiting. But, I sure would like to hear the voice behind those wonderful letters.
I just thank my lucky stars, and WAP, for creating the controversy that has lead me on this journey.
Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly.

xray: It's very admirable that you stick to your guns and continue writing even though your wife doesn't agree. While I understand her point of view, I hope that someday she can see the love you obviously have for humanity since you've taken on writing this prisoner.

Well i have a cousin doing 6 years in prison here in ohio. A friend of mine and i were sitting around talking and she said that there was a site you could go to and write to people in prison. I thought she was nuts so we decided to look it up...I was amazed as i seen how lonely my cousin was and how much he really loved getting my letters. So i figured if i could put a smile on his face then i sure could do it to more people than just him. So here i am...............

I have been addicted for over 2 years now and I discovered this site before Susan Smith came along. As XRay said, there was a lot of contraversy (sp?) of her on the forum, so much so that the whole site was closed down. The little family we had here was bombarded with mainly negative responses to writing to inmates but there were also a lot of positives. Looking back it was a good learning curve for many people. It also brought in many good people like XRay who discovered that writing to inmates is not a disease but a pleasurable experience.

I write to a guy in CA who is in for murder. He is a country boy and used to the open spaces and the beauty of nature. I write to him because I know he is lonely and craves to know what is happening in the free world. He is innocent. Yes I know we hear that all the time. His family have not abandoned him because they also believe he is innocent. A lawyer picked up on his case and for the last few years has worked on his case in his own time and at his own expense because he also believes this man is innocent.
So I guess we each write to inmates for different reasons but I guess the main reason is maybe try to bring some worth back into a person's life. We are each important in the eyes of God despite our mistakes.
