Default Why i write to an inmate

I have a rare genetic disorder and was feeling pretty darn sorry for myself. So now I write to someone who's situation I consider (at least in some ways) worse than my own.

No matter what someone has done, and I carefully selected someone of similar background in a situation I can see myself perhaps getting into who I can relate to more as a friend, definitely not looking for a romantic relationship.

One thing about our justice system is that it isn't all that evenly applied. Some people get away with murder, in other cases where no one actually got hurt, the sentence ends up being longer than for some who actually did commit murder.

I think its a good deed to pick out someone in a fairly inhumane setting (after all the punishment is to be there not to live in the horrible environment a prison usually is)

I have way more empathy for people than I previously did. After a surgery went really wrong for me, I had an undetected infection and ended up in a situation california calls "5150". I was sort of out of it from the pain and said to the doc in response to how I felt about hurting myself that if I were going to be in this much pain indefinitely I'd just keep taking more medicine till the pain went away. Next thing I knew there was a guard posted outside the door, and I was shipped off to jail you pay for a psych eval. They took away my clothes, my makeup, even my pencil! and locked me up with a lot of people who scared the living daylights out of me. It was run rather like a prison and gave me some real insight into how easy it is to get into trouble and get locked up. That experience has stayed with me since.
