Advice needed...What do you think?
Hello. I am still fairly new here and I am happy to say that I decided to write to 10 people in prison to offer support and friendship. Response letters are now back and I am happy about that but I am concerned about a couple. The letters seem sincere but if you read between the lines, they are asking for money in a round about way, or are they? That is why I need your advice because many of you have more experience. One person wrote "I decided to send you a letter instead of my attorney because I only had one stamp left and I only get two free each month." Another one said " My aunt had been sending me money but got married a few months ago and I am running out of funds".
Both remarks were written without asking for money but I got the feeling that is what they really want me to think. Have any of you notice anything like this? Is this is a scam of some sort to get me to send money or am I concerned over nothing? Your advice will be appreciated. Thanks,
Roger

The first one about the attorney doesn't really sound like she is but the other one does. I would just write them back and see what they said in the next letter like if you didn't catch on. I fthey then ask for money I would just let them know that you only want to offer friendship. Without spending money

Hi Roger, good post. It could be a read between the lines and send me money thing, and it may not be. At this point it is hard to tell..but be cautious. Also, You may want to just ride it out a couple of letters and see where it goes. I personally think maybe they were asking for money without coming out and asking for it... but I really dont know that for certain, I say follow your instinct. Have a good evening.

Rodger, when i get that message, i alwasy write back and say, I am truly sorry that things are hard for you, i wish i could help, but i simply cant. If they write back, then i know, if they do, then cool.
I need coffee

rscott - I understand your dilemma. You want to be able to trust but you have heard so many stories about scams, so you end up trying to guess the "true" meaning behind the lines. Take the advice of the others here and write back. You will soon know for sure if they are on-the-level because if they think you are missing the point, they will become a bit more direct about it with each letter. If that is their intention.

Thanks all of you for your feedback. I guess I want to see the good in everyone but have read a few things that make me wonder.
I don't mind helping somone with money after I get to know them and have started building a friendship but the comments on post were included in their 2nd letter to me. Thanks again!
