| I found this article, it is a month old.... but the phones are coming!!!! Yippie. Texas easing restrictions on regular phone access for prison inmates 10:21 AM CDT on Friday, August 15, 2008 AUSTIN – The Texas Board of Criminal Justice has voted to allow prison inmates to use telephones on a prepaid and collect-call basis. The action Thursday ends the nation's last ban on regular phone use by state prisoners. Embarq, a Kansas-based communications company, was awarded a seven-year contract to put the phone service into place. About 120,000 Texas inmates will each be allowed to purchase up to 120 minutes of phone time a month. The privilege will not be extended to an estimated 36,000 inmates with disciplinary problems or gang affiliations, or those on death row. Currently, most state prisoners are allowed only one five-minute collect call every 90 days. The new system will allow calls of up to 15 minutes. ![]() ![]() ![]() FULL STORY HERE: Texas easing restrictions on regular phone access for prison inmates | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News

| Inmates will not be permitted to make overseas calls. Anyone inside the US who wishes to receve calls must be on the inmate's visitation list and must register online at this web site: Enrollment |

| It will be good for those who are approved. However no inmates in Ad Seg will be eligible. My husband is an indoor trusty, so is eligible. But I am overseas, so he cannot call me. His mother is in a care home and does not own the phone line, so he cannot call her. His brother has only a cell phone, as does his younger son, and his older son lives with my husband's ex, who is unlikely to want to sign up for the calls either. So TDCJ wont be making any money out of us with this. |

| I think the pre-paid cost is 23c per minute, and collect should be 29c per minute, or something like that.
