Transfer and Housing

When an inmate is released from a Michigan prison, I was old that he could be transferred to the state he is from by paying $100.00 for the paperwork.

What I want to know since I have never experienced this before is, isn't the inmate supposed to get some paperwork or a letter on where he is to go (housing) upon release?

I had expected that he would be released and able to come home. I live (he lives) in California and is in prison in Michigan. He is supposed to be released in a few months and the probation gentleman who handled his case in the courtroom when sentenced said that I could pay $100.00 to have his case transferred to California, if CA. would accept him here.

But I don't know if there are any stipulations or details like, he would have to have a place to go in Michigan in order o be released at all or they will keep him longer than expected.

He still has an appeal open that he wants me to close for fear of staying in jail or going back to jail longer (if he goes through with the appeal).

Where would I find all of this out? Who do I ask?

Hi Angel, just browsing through threads I don't usually look at, but I will be taking notice in 2 and half years when my pal is released as he is also far from home.

Did you ever find out what will happen?

Yes, Waldron, I did find out.
It's called "Interstate Compact for the Supervision of Parolees and Probationers

All convicted offenders, including misdemeanants, who are placed on parole or probation are eligible to make application for transfer under this agreement. The supervisdion of an offender shall be transferrable to another state if the offender is a resident of the receiving state or has family in the receiving state and can obtain employment there.

Transfer of supervision may also be granted to offenders who are nonresidents and to offenders with no family members in the receiving state if the receiving state consents.

Nonconvicted offenders are not eligible for services under this compact, however, most signatory states agree to grant courtesy supervision.
