1. Make a CV and ask someone to read over it for spelling/grammar. Here are examples:
CV Example. List everything you have done both in and out of prison. Jobs, seminars, courses etc.
2. Be honest about your crime. You will lose your job if you lie on the application and they find out later. When it comes to ticking that box it is important to write "will explain on intervew".
3. Practise a little speech about your crime in front of a mirror. Try not to make it sound like you're making excuses for what you did, that you take full responsibility, that you paid for your crime and are passionate about re-building your new life.
What worked very well for my husband was saying something like this: "I understand that there are thousands out there who do not have a criminal record but they don't have something to prove like I do - that by itself is my personal guarantee that I will work twice as hard in appreciation for you giving me that chance."
4. Be prepared to hear "We're not hiring at this time" and "No thanks" and "No". Be prepared to hear it a LOT, be prepared to hear it again and again. Don't let it get to you and do NOT give up. There is someone out there who is willing to give you a second chance. You will feel depressed, discouraged and frustrated and you will want to give up at some point. Just don't.... do NOT give up. Go out there, spread that CV around like there is no tomorrow.... it will pay off eventually.
