A friend of mine, a 25years old female teacher, pleaded guilty this week to a charge of improper relationship between educator and student and was sentenced to two years in prison. She is now held in Harris County Jail. I wonder if she'll serve all her time in this jail or if she'll be transferred to a prison and where. I heard Gatesville was a very harsh place for women and I wonder if a sweet, pretty, white woman, sentenced for such a felony, won't be a danger in such a place. I know : "if you don't want to serve time, don't do the crime" but she is a good person who made a mistake with a 16 years old guy. In prison, is a woman in a cell or in a dormitory ? During the night, is she alone, or with another inmate ? What about showers ? Alone or not ? If she's naked in front of other inmates, I fear she'll be sexually assaulted. And about work ? She is a teacher and isn't accustomed to hard labour. We hoped probation for her, and her friends are now anxious.

txman, when inmates are sentenced, they almost always move from the county jail into a TDCJ reception unit (known as "intake") after a space is found for them. It is supposed to be by 90 days after sentencing, but TDCJ does not always have space. Your friend will go to one of the women's units.

She will do her time, but then she will also have to sign the Sex Offender's register once she is released. She will not be able to work as a teacher again, so perhaps trying to pick up a new skill while in TDCJ will be a good thing for her. Perhaps hairdressing or something like that (ASE, dont jump on me if I'm sounding naive here!).

Sexual assaults do happen in both men's and women's prisons, but do not believe everything you read in the media. Most inmates just want to do their time and go home again. She will shower with the other women, unless she requests / gets assigned to Ad Seg. I would not be surprised if this happens, given her crime.

The fact that she is white has little bearing on how she will be treated. She is now a female inmate. Abuse happens to all races.

If you are truely a friend, and know other friends of hers, encourage them to write and visit as often as they can. Place a few dollars on her books regularly, but not too much (TDCJ inmates are limited on how much they can spend, depending on what their security classification is). Get things set up so that she has a home and a job to come out to in 2 years time. And really, just be thankful that it is 2 years and not 20.

Yes, we want to visit her as often as we can. Is it allowed, though we aren't relatives ?

Ad Seg is Administrative Segregation. It is when offenders are removed from the general population, either for breaking the rules or for their own safety. They are more restricted in what they are permitted to have and do, but for some, it is the best way to stay safe.

Security classification is what security risk your friend is assessed to be. There are different levels depending on her intake assessments.

ASE would be able to tell you whether the women's units are dorms or cells, but I suspect it is a bit of both.

Friends are permitted to visit, but it will probably be a non-contact visit (through a screen or glass with a phone) for up to 2 hours. You really need to read up on all the information on the TDCJ web site http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/publicat...nders_2008.pdf, and then expect which ever unit your friend arrives at to have slightly different rules.

We'll help you as much as we can, but I have only ever visited at TDCJ men's units although I do write to a female TDCJ inmate.

Who is ASE ?
Are all sexual offenders removed from the other population ? Otherwise, I fear she'll mixed up with other inmates.And a young, good looking middle class woman is obviously more threatened than a gang girl.
We'll read the web site, but we have an other question, though she isn't very important. We wonder if she'll be shackled, or only handcuffed, when she'll move from the county jail into a TDCJ reception unit, or when she'll lose her civil suit : in jail or only in prison. Does she need clothes ?
Jail and prison are for us a foreign world and we have a lot of questions.

HI Txman I did time one Ellis and Polunsky during my long sentence in TDCJ So you know why I so much about TDCJ. I also have female friends in TDCJ whom I correspond with

First is it state jail time or TDCJ time ? Usually two year or less sentences are state jail time where they do not get parole and serve the full sentence

Both state jails and TDCJ units are run by TDCJ kind of confusing . Though prison units usually offer more as far as education and learning new skills .

All TDCJ convicts are cuffed and shackled when being transported .

She will not need any clothing all clothing is removed and they are given white uniforms 3 pairs each week to wear . They can purchase thermals and extra t shirts shorts sneakers at store (commissary ) Try to put about $250 on her account once you learn her TDCJ number Jpay is a convenient fast (with in 24 hrs ) way to do this . She should be able to write you from reception and once she has a TDCJ ID number they usually give them 5 five pre stamped envelops a pencil and some paper . You will not be able to visit for at least a month or so She will need the money ot ger settled in on her assigned unit do not buy blue slip items except radio and hot pot . keep your property to a minimum in reception

You can now have her call you see TDCJ site on how to do this in a way that best fits your needs . you must be on her visiting list and have a land line

She will go to either Crain AKA Gatesville or Woodman in Gatesville for classification and diagnostics when she catches chain to TDCJ . Where she is assigned will depend on many thing security being number 1 .If a unit need a offender with a skill and can be on that unit , if where ever er is space , if they gang affiliated or confirmed the will go to specific units confirmed gang members go to seg and stay there TDCJ tries to keep people from the same area separate .

You can visit despite not being family they will be non contact until she becomes a SA 2 or you are approved by the warden for contact visits . She can have up to 10 ten people on her visiting list . They have to be approved . I an on a TDCJ visiting lists with contact visit with one person and did I time in TDCJ.

She will start as a G -2 as all but confirmed STGs do they go straight to seg .

Showering is not what you see on tv on some units s they are “communal” but a boss same sex ,(guard ) is always present . on many units they have some sort of stall and are searched be for coming and going .

She will be probably not be in physical danger but she will not be well liked by other offenders and will have to put up with a lot . Her crime is a bit different than raping a kid not that it was smart thing to do . She can check out to PC . Though her time will go by much slower as she will be alone most of the time and have much less interaction with others seg and PC are usually separate from each other and run differently depending on unit . .She can say she does not talk about legal things and or I don't wan to talk about ,. this the cover all for mind your own business.

All Female units have both cell blocks and dorms . They live in cubicles or 2 person cells unless in seg or PC . In TDCJ seg is almost always alone in a 12 x 7 cell 23/7 .

There is little privacy in the dorms a but more on cell blocks . Most cell blocks are 2 person cells . Seg is usually 1c person in a approx 12 x 7 cell usually they spend 23 hours a day in these cells . .

I really cannot say where you friend will be assigned . Probably not Crain / AKA Gatesville . That is a medium min unit with mostly long sentenced well behaved offenders with primarily dorm housing and many educational and vocational and college courses available . College courses are paid form the offenders trust fund about $ 160 or more per course .Crain is multi purpose facility . and considered one of the better units to do TDCJ time on

Mountain view is where female DR is and is a maximum security unit . It is a small unit and houses mostly lifers and high profile offenders due to the high staff to offender ratio .

Murray is a MAX unit considered the toughest female unit . It houses more aggressive offenders as well as trusties and has the largest female seg cell block and sega nd PC housing .

Hilltop is medium/ minimum unit primarily for younger women with children and short less than 10 years sentences most are drug offenders . Though I doubt your friend will go there .


Hobby in Marlin is a Max security unit capable of housing every level of offender from trusty to seg
My guess is Hobby if she does not have state jail time . If she has state jail time Woodman or Plane would be my guess .

“ Happy” Hobby is nowhere near as bad as it's reputation and is one of the better TDCJ units really .

She will need to get these items from store (commissary but in TDCJ it is called store ) items ASAP a hot pot sneakers, radio and earphones , envelopes stamps (you cannot send stamps ) , writing paper . Hygiene items what TDCJ gives you is truly basic . Thermals for winter . She will a have maximum spend of $80 every two weeks Rarely make a full spend . it only br9ngs unwanted attention from .STG , bosses rank and other convicts

She should learn TDC terminology such as turn out when she hears say field squad turn out . She had better be ready for work if she is on field squad all offenders usually are for at least a few months . some are not only because the have a skill or cannot work on field squad for a number of reasons .

It can also be used to tell convicts to in a section to go to a particular place in the prison
deuce it up means to get in pairs of two in line for count
strip out means strip off your cloths
Make store means you went to store commissary ) and got thing orv in conversation when do you make store . mean when do you go to store .

There is a lot more than I can list in one thread . The sooner she learns this the better .

Offenders/Convicts never refer to guards in conversation as as officers or C/O they are bosses rank , the law other terms I cannot post calling them a officer or C/O is considered to be bad and giving them respect they not entitled to may I add rightfully most of the time

Never call another offender a inmate that is disrespectful convict is the preferred term..

In person simply say sir or mam or Mr/ MS (whatever their last name is) never say officer so and so

Because she is new and new to prison she will seen as what is called a new boot both bosses and convicts will mess with her and test her .

It is best she keep to herself mind her own business do not make friends she is not there to be any ones friend . Never be friendly with bosses o rank


She will not be kept separate unless she requests PC and that can be a very long two years . I highly doubt in her case she will be in physical danger . Stay in her cubicle /cell a lot read a lot take courses such as CHANGES . Voyagers Cognitive Intervention and . Vocationals She will never teach in again any where at any level . Though her degree wil help it will probably get her a better “job” once she does well on field squad . As Is aid she will probably be on Hobby unless it is state jail time . TDCJ depends on convict labor for almost everything so she might get a teaching assistant job in TDCJ ironically . TDCJ does not pay convicts for labor they depend on friends and family for money
