I totally agree with Lawdog on this one.

There was a case where a grandmother did this for her beloved grandson.

She had no idea she was sending someone's death warrant back into the California department of corrections.

She is no longer able to have any correspondence at all with her grandson.

Yes dragon they can turn an ordinary sentence into something violent that wouldn't register to us in the free world.

That is why they have GI officers checking the mail of validated and verified gang members.

It might look nice and innocent, but trust me, looks can be deceiving.

Which is why I will not break the rules. I do not want anything of that nature on my conscious.

If there wasn't a reason for the rule, the inmates could do it themselves.

I write them to be a friend, not to be their co-defendant. If it's against the rules, I am not doing it

I find it unfair that their is certain regulations to follwo on inmate to inmate correspondence. What is the big deal? I would understand if the inmate is a gang member or even affiliated with gangs, then those shouldn't have inmate to inmate correspondence. Not all inmate are gang members or even thinking about doing something bad when wanting to write to another inmate at another prison. And for punishing them if mailroom finds out what is going on... thats messed up. At least 3 months in the hole. Not 6 months. That is so ridiculous. Unnecessary punishment. All for a letter from another inmate. And if it happens again the punishment (6months) could be higher. Why? If the inmate is a gang member, then fine do what is right. But not all inmates are gang members so all inmates shouldn't be treated as gang members or bad. Inmates lives are already bad as it is, and for one simple letter they could be punished. Ridiculous.

The saying one bad apple spoils the bunch really applies to this topic.

The penal system has a jobs to protect those on the inside as well as prevent continued criminal activity.

Often times, more so than not, when offenders are communicating by kites or letters passed from one person to another, they are in some ways carrying out hits, passing information that could be criminal information, or discussing illegal activities.

Obviously not all offenders who would like to communicate with someone they met along the way would do so in a manor to harm someone or to continue criminal activity.

There really is more of a risk to allow it, than to prohibit it. Which is why it is not allowed. So really... one bad apple spoils the bunch here.
