| hi i was recently charged with cheque forgery and have been told jail time is possible. I'm really scared about this more than you can imagine and really want to know more info on what im facing really cos im feeling pretty hopeless at the moment. |

| Hi Ashleigh I don't know too much about American law, but i'm sure i was told that the typical punishment for forgery is a fine or up to two years imprisonment or both. No doubt they'll take into consideration any mitigating factors like how long you'd been writing those cheques for etc. I'm sorry if thats not too helpful, sure someone else on the forum can provide a better insight! C xo

| Ashleigh, With out know more where you are and what kind of charges you face or where convicted of it is very hard say much . If you are going to prison I can give you some advice on that as I have done time Prison and jail are two differnt things jail is usually where you go begfore trial and do misdemeanor time if where ever you are does that Prison is where you go after being convicted of a felony at least in the US . They are similar in someways differnt in others .

| Are they felony charges or misdemeanor . I am guessing felony . you almost always face prison time if it the charges are a felony in FL. You r best bet is to ask your attorney what the charges are . You can ask what your attoeny thinks will happen . More often than not your attorney will see what kind of plea bargain they he or she can get . The prosecutor will try to getas tough a sentence as possible in most cases though not always . Believe o it or not some do try to play fair . If there is not any way to avoid prison you can ask what to do to survive once inside . It sounds like it is your first time dealing with the criminal (in) justice system. You probably will be sent to a lower security prison . It is still prison though . If you do end up doing time keep to your self read lots of books . take courses . do your prison job . do not get involved in any ones 'business" . never talk about legal issues to any one but your attorney . Do not get in to prison debt . Always watch what is going on and body language it is a big clue as to what a person is really thinking or doing . Usually you can tell if something is going to kick off though it is less likely in a female prison . Avoid the whole drug scene learn how to use commissary (store ) fast . Do not become freindly with the guards . Be respectful and aloof never give out personal details of your life to any one . Try to avoid getting caught up in cliques . If you can ask if some one will correspond with you before you go in . FL has rules against having a third party or you placing an ad on the internet . Though that law and rules are being challenged in federal court and the plaintiffs will probably win .

| You are welcome . If you you will do time . I can help you out a bit with what goes on in prison though I am sure you will not be in a place that is anything like Where I was They were two very tough mens prisons in TX . There is also felony probation in FL that is something to ask your attorney about . Though in principle I dissagree with plea agreamnts becuse once you do you admit guilt along with if we took every case to trial the cost would bankrunpt us very quickly . Just to begin with . If you go to trial and plead not guilty you can appeal on what ever grounds are appropriate in your case . Best of luck to you . Let us know how things go if you can .

| Ashleigh it was your post that inspired me to write here about my life in prison. But that is another story. Ashleigh as I understood you post you are terrified because you are going to prison. I saw no requests for legal advise or opinions. I though you main concern was fear for your own personal safety. ASE is absolutely correct in everything he tells you to do and not to do when you actually enter prison. I want to add and another piece of reality you will face. Everyone you will meet and see in prison was as scared as you are when they first realize they were going to prison. There are no monsters or bad people in prison waiting to hurt anyone that comes through those doors. All you have remember is what ASE tells you...Be yourself and just that!! Do not pretend that you are tough, trying to act in order to send mix signals to those around you..That is a bod idea, and it never works. Such a person although is not treated badly, but surely will be shunned by others...Others like you that do not want to get in any type of disciplinary hassles. Just like you, all prisoners, everywhere I have been most of my adult life live with one thought in mind: "I just want to do my time and get out"...That Ashleigh, is a true advise from me to you..You have nothing to fear about your personal safety as long as you "be yourself"...I just know ASE is correct because he speaks of prison in Texas. Although Florida is tough on men, it is not for ladies. |

| great post rolando . you and ase can be such a sample i mean you both know what life in prison is and can be a great help for people who are going in prison. most of people are very scared don't know what to expect behind bares i guess that's why we'pen' pals are very important in their lives. keep on going with your postings i like them very much. hugs, whiterose.

| Thank you whitrose. It is precisely why I joined WAP. When I read that post of the lady who was scared, the least I could do was offer some words of advise in something I am very familiar with. After joining I realize that others here also are able to give advise..My goal is never to patronize, but rather to agree and discuss any issue about jails or prisons. Whiterose, here is a bear hug to you...You had this coming! |
