The Washington Supreme Court issued a stay of execution for convicted serial killer Robert Lee Yates Jr. today. Justices also appointed attorneys Ronald Ness of Port Orchard and Judith Mandel of Tacoma to represent Yates during the next stage of his appeals process, according to an order signed by chief justice Gerry Alexander.
The order gives Ness and Mandel 180 days to file a so-called personal restraint petition for Yates. Prosecutors would have up to 120 days after that deadline to file their response.
