Default Pardon to wrongly convicted death row inmate

Pardon granted to wrongly convicted Texas man

Uzbekistan News.Net
Thursday 1st October, 2009

A Texas man who was on Death Row for over nearly thirty years has been pardoned by Texas Governor Rick Perry.

The pardon means James Woodard will now be able to claim millions of dollars from the state.

Woodward’s conviction was set aside 18 months ago after DNA testing showed he didn’t commit a 1980 murder.

His case was taken up by The Innocence Project which has said Woodard was kept on death Row longer than any other prisoner in Texas history.

Woodard was the boyfriend of the victim, who was found sexually assaulted and strangled.

Subsequent DNA testing showed Woodard did not commit the sexual assault.

Mr Woodward will receive $80,000 for each year of incarceration, plus a lifetime annuity.

James Woodard is the 39th person cleared by DNA evidence in Texas.

Grits for Breakfast: James Woodard pardoned!

James Woodard pardoned!

Congrats to James Woodard, Texas' longest-serving DNA exoneree (28 years) who finally received his formal pardon yesterday from Governor Perry. AP notes that "The official declaration of James Woodard's innocence clears the way for the Dallas man to collect millions of dollars from the state." (See 60 Minutes coverage for background on his case.)

I got to know James a bit during the legislative session, particularly during the exoneree lobby day organized by the Innocence Project of Texas when he and I walked around together all afternoon talking to members and their staffs. At the time, he'd been out just a few months.

Like many exonerees, James has faced health problems and a rough transition back to the free world.

Obviously there were and are very serious problems with our justice system if it takes decades for this man to find Justice

Then there is not justice for the victims as the real killer has not and probably never be brought to Justice.

Mr. Elric, ordinarily I tend to make a comment to articles that I post, and try to avoid others. I find you an interesting person, I guess I already have said that previously.

In this post, again, you do not provide a link to tell me how you reach a conclusion of the "lining up to pick the poor guy`s pocket". I would like to see it, perhaps I can post something on that. It would make good reading don`t you think?

Mr. Elric, I am in Milwaukee, U.S.A. Where exactly is Melnibonne?

it is horrible. It just seems that way to me.

This man suffered a lot. No amount of money can repair that. He should not have to suffer being ripped off and stolen from.

Like someone who wins the lotto, folks come from out of no where to take advantage of, this poor guy has suffered enough. 30 yrs inside, he may know all the cons play inside, yet the free world is another.

Hello Whiterose, thank you for remembering us and posting
once again. Where have you been?

I hope all is well with you and I want to be the first to welcome you back -- that is if you have actually been away--and not posted elsewhere that I have not seen.

Congrats to you.

Your friend

Robert
