The Brandenburg Gate before...
and after the wall ...
I didn't happen to live through the division of Germany, Andreas, but the reunification had to have been a happy day for all Germans and especially for those whose families were divided by the wall.
Do you celebrate this day with a lot of partying, fireworks, and that sort of thing? Here in the U.S., that is how we would celebrate our Independence Day. So . . have a great time and don't drink any bad beer. :-)
A majority of germans enjoys the working-free day, a longer weekend. Each year the government makes a central, an official celebration in another town, this year in Hamburg. In Berlin is the party mile opened, of course at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlins middle. There are several concert stages installed where various well-known artists play. The whole celebration ends on sunday evening.
Here in Berlin we have a lot of public events this weekend. Tomorrow i will be at the Brandenburg Gate to check how the beer tastes and evenings i will be on a birthday party. Prost !, ääh Cheers !
I lived in Germany during the time the wall was still up and traveled to the point where East Germany, West Germany and Czechoslovakia came together and saw the wall and the guard towers and bunkers.
I was back in the states when the wall came down - what a joyous occasion. It was so moving and emotional.
I am so glad you are able to celebrate that occasion.
