| No one relishes using animals for experimentation, but the medical community has long insisted that such research helps develop potentially life-saving drugs and treatments. Is this justification compelling enough to continue using animals for medical research?

| I know it needs to be tested, but i dont agree on animals being used, I know im gonna get bashed for this probably but i think they should test on child molesters.

| Id prefer them testing on animals than humans. Saying that there are some humans who behave worse than animals, like UKGal says, child molesters. I don't see a problem testing stuff on them

| If the animal is treated humanely and care for,no problem. But if we went to people, that opens a lot of ethical questions, no matter who the people were. For example, a lot of the things hitler did to the Jews and others were tried and perfected on the mentally handicapped in Germany first. Think about it.

Not a bash UK, but your comment brought this to mind. No matter what the crime or non crime. No way... The United States government did something that was wrong—deeply, profoundly, morally wrong. It was an outrage to our commitment to integrity and equality for all our citizens. . . . clearly racist. —President Clinton's apology for the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment to the eight remaining survivors, May 16, 1997For forty years between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,”1 their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all. The data for the experiment was to be collected from autopsies of the men, and they were thus deliberately left to degenerate under the ravages of tertiary syphilis—which can include tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death. “As I see it,” one of the doctors involved explained, “we have no further interest in these patients until they die.” Using Human Beings as Laboratory Animals The true nature of the experiment had to be kept from the subjects to ensure their cooperation. The sharecroppers' grossly disadvantaged lot in life made them easy to manipulate. Pleased at the prospect of free medical care—almost none of them had ever seen a doctor before—these unsophisticated and trusting men became the pawns in what James Jones, author of the excellent history on the subject, Bad Blood, identified as “the longest nontherapeutic experiment The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment — Infoplease.com

| Testing on Humans brings up all kinds of very disturbing moral and ethical issues . No matter who are and what they did . Hopefully with advances in computers we will not have to use animals either there are ethical and moral questions about that in some cases. I can tell there is no need to test anything on Skinners/Chi Mos such as the now dead Evil child killing rapist Mark Schwab in prison if they get into population .They will get much worse .

| It depends on what types of animals,,Mice no problem,,,any animal that can be bred in mass quantities I think is no problem i mean hell we eat them that way too ,,,mass bred and kept in cages |

| Elric, you´re right. I believe you talk about the Nazis euthanasia program, the cruel experimentations on humans in concentration camps and about the "Endlösung". The human life is the most valuable gift, that´s why such experimentations on humans are inhumanely. Animal experimentations are in the nature of things, i guess. Surely we all know cruel pictures from such facilities but on the other hand is each butchery no nice place for animals. And we need what they do. |
