OMAHA, Neb. -- The mother of nine kids left at an emergency room in Creighton University Medical Center died from a brain aneurysm 17 months ago, days after delivering the youngest child, said the father.

Gary Staton dropped off his kids Wednesday night at 8 p.m., officials at the Department of Health and Human Services said.

"I was with her for 17 years, and then she was gone. What was I going to do?" Staton said. "We raised them together. I didn't think I could do it alone. I fell apart. I couldn't take care of them."

As horrible as abandoning kids is, perhaps he had good intention and its a blessing in diguise. He isnt saying he does not want them he is saying he could not cope, this should be a lesson to others.

I think the "Safe Haven Law" is one that the state should keep, may save many innocent lives from being destroyed. Especially if parents feel they can hand over their children in a safe environment and not be prosecuted in the process.
Seriously sad when a fathers feels he has no options open to him other than to release his children into the care of the authorities.
Sometimes the choice to surrender, is far greater a struggle than the choice to keep. I hope for all concerned it will be a healthy one in the end for the children and Gary. Grief effects many of us in very individual ways. May they all find their own peace within.

I can certainly relate with this father having been left by my childrens father at a point in my life where I was unemployed, pregnant and had 5 children to care for 2 of which were teens well into the defiancy BUT, to hand them over?!?! wow! I sincerly hope some wonderful family steps forward to keep these children together although I know that is unlikely. It is just very sad for everyone involved. I know from my experience, not knowing where to turn or how to pay the bills and feel the kids is a horrible feeling, to me it was the biggest feeling of failure I have ever felt. In time however, God heals and takes care of us. over time things have worked out for me and mine.
