| Celebration Of Americans Turning In Their Neighbors, Family Members Officials, media praise "wonderful," "creative" informants for making a living from reporting friends to the authorities http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles...ly_members.htm ...an increasing number of Americans are becoming informants and turning in their neighbors and family members to the authorities in return for cash rewards. Citing gas prices, foreclosure rates and runaway food price inflation, The Times lauds the fact that citizens are reporting on each other, ensuring "a substantial increase in Crime Stopper-related arrests and recovered property, as callers turn in neighbors, grandchildren or former boyfriends in exchange for a little cash."

| I’m actually surprised they are just now addressing this as a new phenomenon? I’m sure it’s been going on for years. My own mother once told me that if I ever came to her and confessed to committing a crime, she would turn me in herself. In her case, it was less to do with claiming any reward money and more about me "taking responsibility for my actions" yadayada. She also feels that the earlier one turns themselves in and seeks legal assistance, the better. Can’t really argue with her there. People tend to equate fleeing with guilt.

| well, this happens more times then one thinks. we are the type of parents that believe in taking responsibility for ones actions. Other wise they will never learn and be headed down a road that will take them even more disaster.

| I guess where it can become VERY scary and a real problem is ratting on people who are innocent? It starts to become reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials. I felt obligated to bring that example up because I live in New England lol.

| If one who rats" on another, and they are innocent. There should be no problem any how. I have no idea with the increase, if many of these are calls like made to 911, just plain obviously people out for money, nothing real or factual. If anyone knows of a criminal act, be it their son, mother or other, it is a good thing. The police need the public's help to help society. They depend on the help which I think is great !!! They have found many serious criminals, before they had more victims, we should watch out for one another. I find it sad, it takes money to get one motivated to do so though !!!

| All good points. I guess we would need to hope that if someone is innocent of a particular crime and they are wrongfully accused by another, be it family, or a complete stranger, we would have to hope that the police would be able to figure this out and dismiss them as a possible suspect. This happens time and time again. All leads must be checked on. Sexual assault or molestation comes to mind but in that situation, because the accusation is so serious, it needs to be thoroughly investigated.

| I would never rat anyone out, I dont need the money and it isn't a picnic to go to prison. I guess too that when you been locked up you learn snitching is not a good thing and can earn you a shank. |

| I will admit "telling" on someone for cash or reward is questionable at best. For one thing I would question their motives or credibility. However, if I had a family member in trouble, I wouldn't want them to flee. It is my feeling that hiding and running is the worst thing you can possibly do. But I guess we are comparing apples and oranges here as far as circumstances. I would never just phone the cops because I suspected my neighbor was selling drugs or something like this. For one thing, I’m a little too fond of my life.

| oops, well, I wouldn't turn someone in for money, I was mainly speaking of my own kids if they was to get into trouble if i would make them take responsbility. as far as accepting money? nop. AND, I dont think I would want to get into the triangle. surrounding all that mess with being a snitch

| From my experiences most people will turn someone in anonymously for ether revenge or envy like in the case with Susan. The money is a growing concern in the court off law where witness are being paid under the table large amounts off money to testify for the prosecution from victims off the family to secure a guilty verdict. Basically a professional under the table witness. I think we all on this forum know by now. The average citizen will say whatever for there own self-gain, again evident from the above link same goes for jury members. |
