| Texas Prison System Part 6 by Rolando….08/28/2009 The names, other than the Warden in this story are fictitious and not true. This will avoid confusion to the reader. __________________ The man was an imposing intimidating tower of human pitiless, cold and full of raw hate. Convicts baptized him with the name “Nayotas”-- Spanish slang meaning nose. His hawkish formed nose made this man display a deadly image of threat and menace. Armed with a white pearled handled shiny silver colt 45 strapped low on his right leg. The strips of leather of his gun holster tied tightly around the dark brown leg of his pants. He wore a matching dark brown suit jacket adorned with small silver flowers and a white Stetson cowboy hat. He was Joe Hines, the tallest Texan I had yet to see while in the Texas Prison System… He was Warden of the Harlem prison farm #1. The loud bellowing shout of his threat to get off of his car triggered a mass dash to jump off the vault without considering the landing. Sammy and I were chained together by the neck and we landed squarely on our feet and standing. The other two prisoners landed on their knees and Frank starting laughing. A tragic mistake. Three or four cowboys standing close by rushed the fallen prisoners. The Warden walked to the pair and unleashed his boots on Frank, kicking him without regards to Frank`s head, spewing profanities and racial name calling while three of the cowboys pulled the fallen men to their feet by pulling on the chain. Frank and the other prisoner were dragged towards the chain-link fence while being plummeted with fists and boots by the cowboys. The Warden moved towards Sammy and me and shoved his face inches from ours. It would be the first time I would hear this man pronounce the words. “you Mother***** gotta get your mind right! while you are on my penitentiary”. I was aghast when l looked toward the chain-link fence. Frank was handcuffed and stood facing the fence. One cowboy guard took a piece of chain that was secured by a lock high on the fence. He opened the lock and pulled one end of the chain down towards him. The cowboys hung Frank on the tips of his toes high to the fence. I could not believe what I was seeing. The cowboy guards cussed and threatened while removing the chains from our necks while the Warden sneered and spat tobacco at the shiny shoes of Paul, the prisoner who had been chained with Frank. I looked at Frank hanging on the fence at the same time looking at the guard tower just feet above. Two cowboys stood there holding rifles and a machine gun was attached to metal holder that permitted the machine gun to be moved around at will. Take your Godd********shoes off, your bunch of ***the Warden was shouting. “Do you see that Mexican hanging by the fence?” he wanted to know. We just starred horrified. “If you came to my penitentiary with big Mexican ****, you hang them over there with that Mexican on the fence, when you leave here you can take them”, he spat at us. “I am the only one who can carry big ****in this farm, now get your *****inside my building” We started walking towards the open gate when I felt a sharp boot kick on my butt. “Run, you lazy bastards!” the voice behind me demanded. I started trotting faster bare footed on the red sharp clay rocks that were evenly laid on the yard of this barrack type farm. All the ground around me was red solid clay as I ran faster towards the cowboy standing by the entrance of the two story farm building. There are large windows with bars looking out to the yard as we approached. “Run man!” came the shouts of the prisoners inside at the windows yelling for us to avoid the kicks of the cowboys. Funny how at this time I noticed how bad in need of a paint job this building was in. It was so hot in late July in Texas that I knew right away that the sun would be more rough on me later.
