Default Just another newbie...

Hi everyone, just another newbie to the site. I am new to the pp experience. I have written to a few inmates only over the last couple days. Some close to where I am, and others on the other side of the country. I have a friend who has been incarcerated for almost the whole time I've known him, he is in Texas. But unfortunately, he can't seem to be honest about why he's in jail. He fibbed to me about it and I found out online the real reason. I am hoping to hear back from at least one person that I wrote to, I'd like one or maybe more penpals. I am a single mom and having sole custody of my special needs child, it keeps me pretty grounded and get very little time for dating.

Hi, and thanks everyone for the kind words. I sort of did things backwards, I sent some letters out and then went through the forums. I read about not corresponding to two people from the same institution. Thankfully,I went back through the people I wrote to and they were in different places. Geeze, would be awful to start off on a bad note. I am looking forward to writing to these people.

One quick question, is there a limit to how many I should write to? I am sure I won't get a response from everyone, but don't want a whole slew of people to write to either.

Hi Single Mom,

The only limit would be how much time you want to spend writing, and to some extent the quality and purpose of why you are writing.
Several years ago, there was a woman who wrote to something like 35 people, every week. But, basically, what she was doing, was sending out a newsletter. And then, consider the cost of postage. Whew!

I think that if you want your letters to be honest, frank, homey and personal, you start out with just one or two PPs. That way you can dedicate your time to getting to know this person and develop a friendship. Once you get started, you can then see how you feel about writing and how much time you have.

I have always viewed writing to an inmate as a deep personal committment. I think that once you start writing to someone, they become pretty attached to you. Chances are that they don't have any other outside contacts, so you are a god to them, a ray of sunshine, a savior from complete and total boredom. So, if you start writing and then get tired of it, and drop them, they will be devastated. I know that many of them are used to ill treatment, but I still think that it would be cruel to do that to someone.

Well, that's just my personal viewpoint. There may be many who disagree. But, I throw that out for thought. I hope that you find a great PP, and Happy Writing. :-)

Hi Xray48:

Thanks so much for the reply. It makes alot of sense what you said about not having a ton of PP's to write to. I started out by sending 6 letters, doesn't mean I'll hear from all of them and then again, maybe I will. I plan on only having a couple to write to. I am also going to also write to some who: get little to no mail, who are on death row, and who are serving life sentences. Being a single mom to a special needs child, my free time for dating is very limited and I would love to have someone who I can connect with, doesn't need to lead to anything, but heck, if it does, that would be great as well. My goal is to help lift someone's spirits and in return have them do that for me. I do know one really good friend who is in jail in Texas, but I knew him way before he went in and honestly, he lied to me and it gave me a bad feeling about keeping him in my life in the future.

Welcome to wap!
I love writing inmates whether by long hand aor by computer type so the can read my writing. A lot of people inside or out can never be honest with themselves. Writing for me is an adventure with lots of bumps and a few very good quality frinds not out to use me for whta I cannot offer.
I hope your attempts strike what you honestly seek!
