What a great website. I have just sent my first letter and abit nervous and excited about receiving a letter back.

I hope he replies.

Just wondered if anyone knows how long it takes to send and receive letters, sound anxious lol. I am in the uk and sending to usa. i heard it can take a week.

Do most inmates reply to your letters? I am attached and have said so in my letter, so friendship only so not sure if I will get response. Is anyone else attached and getting mail?

Also what are you allowed to send, photo, books etc?

Just one more thing, my partner knows i have sent letter but have found family and friends quite judgemental. I have written to a man who is not receiving much mail and has been inside since he was 16 for gang related crime. I think everyone deserves a friend and I just want to help but family and friends think i am mad.

I am in the US myself, so I am not sure how long it will actually take. Someone else will be able to answer that one for you.

In most cases, they do respond back. But please also know that if they are on indigent, ( no money but what the state offers? then they may have all the pals they can handle. I have always made it a habit to send a card if I didn't hear from them in a certain amount of time just in case they didn't receive the letter. IF i still don't hear back, I move on to another.

Each prison has their own set of rules of what they can and can not have. I would not recommend sending anything at first, at least until you got to know the person. Many threads on here that can explain to you why.

you will more then likly find more then just family being judgmental and the best thing you can do is follow your own heart. dont allow people to make those decision for you.

Hi fairy, welcome on WAP. Im from Holland and normally it takes around a week before he get my letter. I'm almost sure you will get a letter back, specially because he's on the not recieving maillist.

Your very right everyone deserves a friend. It's your choice, and all i can say is you did a great thing! And i wish you lots of happy writeing!

Hello Fairy~ Most families are going to judge, because in most peoples minds if someone is in prison then they are not a good person. I know for me I know I am a good man, who just as a youngster made bad choices. I think some men might want to get a relationship hoping for perks like visits, calls, love letters, but then there are ones like me who I dont care about calls, visits and love letters wont be happening. I will go for my sentencing in July, and no more delays, so I will take with me a few people I met on this site to write. Good Luck with your new friendship.

I'm also in the UK and for me it usually takes 2 weeks to send a letter and then get one back but it has been quicker, like 8 days and it has been 3 weeks, think it depends on the prisons too and the post office here.
I am attached, both my pp's know and respect that and even if we do have a little flirt every now and again in a letter, we are just friends, and I do class them as friends now, they are both amazing guys who just made mistakes.

I'm also in the uk. My letters normally take 6 days to get to the USA and then a further 6 -12 days to get a reply. My penpal and I are both single and currently we just want friendship. Both of us love receiving letters from eachother and now into the 4th month I'm really pleased with how things are going. We have a little flirt now and then but it's all harmless so far!
