Hi all. I'm new at all this, I've recently become friends w/ a person who is in and out of jail because of substance abuse, misdemeanors, etc. Anyway, he is in again over the holidays(disturbing peace charge and an attachment, municipal). I'd like to go visit, but feel very nervous. I just don't know what to expect. Can anyone fill me in in regards to what to expect during a basic visitation in a prison? Are you allowed to hug, do they frisk you, etc?? How long does a visit last? Are you in one room or in a room w/many other inmates? etc . Thanks.

All of that depends on the state he is in, what faciltiy and the level of supervision there. You should be able to do an internet search and find all of that out. I can tell you what its like in Michigan but I'm unsure of other states.

The visitation really depends on where he is. If it's prison or jail. The jail visitation is generally different from Prison visitation.

In all facilities, you must be listed on the visitation list.

You will go through some sort of security check point, that varies by facility (state or federal prison, or jail and by state).

All facilities have a set visitation schedule and this too depends on where he is, and what type of facility he is in.

If you can provide more information, (such as state of incarceration and what type of incarceration it is - state prison, federal prison or jail) I am sure we can give you a more specific answer.
