Different prisons have different rules. The best thing to do is call the facility and ask.

Like mentioned before differenet joints have different rules. Here in Michigan the only thing that we can do is send appropriate pictures and money orders. They are allowed to shop approved catalogs. its fun for them to pick something for themself. Gives them the freedom of choice in a very limited society.

I send pictures of things that he dosent get to see everyday. the lake, horses and dogs and things like that it brightens his day.

they all love mail no matter what

Well good thing I checked this thread....my pp told me that they could get books from two approved vendors, Yahoo and Amazon, and I ordered him a couple of books on Amazon as a surprise...went and cancelled the order. He is also in prison in Michigan, so I am assuming the rules are the same for all of the facilities....

Ms. K,

I think you can send books to a Michigan prison. Like your pp said, just as long as it's from an approved vendor like Amazon. And it probably has to be new books too... Anyway, maybe the previous poster was talking about things she could send for herself and wasn't talking about sending things through a vendor...

Ah! Makes sense. I should probably take the advice I have read on the board and call the prison to make sure it's not a problem. I would like to surprise him, so hopefully it's a possibility. I am leery b/c I guess he got some really graphic letter from a man (who found his ad on this site) that was rejected due to it's "graphic homosexual content". He told me he has to go to a hearing to explain that it was an unsolicited letter, etc. so I just want to be sensitive to making sure I follow all rules in regards to sending him stuff.

thanks for posting that...after all the discussion I went on the Michigan DOC web site and found that, and thought to myself, these people are going to think I am an idiot for not checking to see what the rules are!

I am glad to know though, that I can send him books unannounced. It kind of ruins a surprise gift when you have to let the person know that they are getting something!

Hi everybody,
My friend likes everybody i send. I use lots of different colours and paper and stickers, so every letter has a different look. He really likes that. Or i send postcards with special quotes. Sometimes i cut funny news out of the paper or i send him information about a special item (i love to use wikipedia for that). And ofcourse pictures! And sometimes a make photoframes from thin karton for him to cheer up his cell. And this week i send glow in the dark stars, so he can me a starry sky in his cell, because i know he miss to see that.
And beside that, i send free magazines and with Christmas a Christmaspackage from inmate package programm. O, yes and lyrics and poems, he like also ;-)
