Question yet another book question

Trying to find out if its ok to send a hard back book to an inmate in Ky. Searched the state website and found nothing. Most good books take at least 6 months to a year before they come out in paperback form or sometimes I can't even find a paperback copy.

As usual, thanks

In most prisons it's not allowed to send in books with hard cover, most only allow soft cover books

The reason hard cover books are not allowed in most prisons is obvious.
If I wanted to smuggle contraband to some pp all I had to do was remove
the cover carefully and stash anything like drugs, hack saws, documents
and then just reassemble the book together and mail it. It does not take
rocket scientist to figure this out. Even publishers have pp somewhere.

No reason to question my intelligence.

From a purely technological point of view, what about a Kendle or e-book viewer???

Would that be usable if the books were pre-installed?

As of now prisoners cannot get kindle . Though it might be irrelevant due to cost and that it needs a lot reworking . The idea is great though. If some onecouldsorte alot ona USB stiuck they would be much more usable.

Then USB sticks cannot go into prison for obvious reasons unless maybe from a large well known book store like Amazon or Barnes and Noble

Some DOCs do allow MP 3s and X boxes not other game systems but defiantly not I Pods for obvious reasons .

thing is i have yet to handle a kindle or whatever as yet. I do not know if they are only internet updated, or if you can use a USB stick or a memory card, etc. I dont mind them, but I am not sure if they would be able to survive the enviroment. Regular paper-back books tend to go to pieces in water. But a kendle or whatever would have to be able to survive the enviroment.
Hate to sound childish, but Fisher-price makes a video camera, or did for kids that used a cassete tape a few years ago, and those things could take a beating...
Maybe jail or prison kendle, if approved needs very strong casing, etc to survive.

ipod can be charged from just wall power BUT not sure why there would be a problem if the Ipod was using Flash-ram as storage rather than a conventional HDD. This would make even more sense if the price of flash keeps dropping...certainly more damage proof...

hmm...need to think more on this one....

With kindle you have to download the book .from the authorized seller . You cannot transfer data to your PC so a USB stick is useless for now I might be wrong . You can only use new data no back ups . Until they change the it be will be a novelty item .
I looked into one because i fly alot a regular book is better for now . Though both are good things in the lon grun i hope we do not lose our real books . They are a essential part of history beside they can be preserved and copied easier for now . I would hate to see all out history go away . I understand digital and photographic storage is only good for about150 years ! Yikes

Ok a EX Con likes history and more you would be surprised at what is read in prison . I know more than one ex cons who have a MA two a PHD, me a JD and dual BA' . There is in common' strong family support .

I fully support books and full BA education . Sometimes just reading opens minds . it also makes fora better society ,. Most ex cons try harder than any one in college I know .

Professional time here--

Preservation is a large part of what we do. Average book life is about 30 years, but that is ver dependent on acids and stuff in the paper. Conditions wherre the books are kept also play a HUGE part. Humidity, insects, and damge play a part too.

Currently, microfilm is the most stable way to preserve stuff. BUT try getting someone to repair a microfilm reader...and believe me I WANT ONE FIXED. Magnetic tape is bad cause the chaged areas lie on top of each other. 3-5 years or so with them. Not sure about CD's, dvds, etc, i am thinkng the problem with that is the players for the media. That could be the limiting factor with them.
NASA has tons of magnetic records of the data from testflights, etc, but nothing to read the tape with...
