Nearly 20 Years After Rape and Murder Conviction, Steven Barnes Is Released from Prison Based on DNA Testing



‘Unvalidated and exaggerated science convicted Steven Barnes and cost him nearly two decades, but real science finally secured his freedom,’ Innocence Project says

(UTICA, NY; November 25, 2008) – Innocence Project client Steven Barnes was released from prison this morning, nearly two decades after he was wrongfully convicted of rape and murder in Oneida County. New DNA test results support Barnes’ longstanding claim of innocence in the 1985 rape and murder of a high school student for which he was convicted in 1989.

why did it took so long i guess they alredy know for years he is innocent.....well i'm happy there is justice!!

That is wrong of this to have happened. I think that all crimes that happened before 1993 or so need to be re-opened (the cases) and get the innocents out of prison. At least re-open the cases that the prisoner claims he is innocent. Justice... after twenty years. (During htis time he could have gottne married and had children. Litte too late. Would anybody go to jail knowing you are innocent, but its okay, justice will prevail - eventually. Yea damn right - one year in the prison system would be too much if I knew I was innocent. There is a movie about this stiuation... It is HURRICANE, based on a true story. Shoud watch it. Brought tears to my eyes.

well 2 decades ago they didnt have the DNA testing as they do now.

it just so sad that this person had to spend all this time in prison for nothing.
