Default Frances Newton - Huntsville 19/09/06

Dear friends,

I've seen some requests here where the serious threads are, well here is one :

Yesterday they showed on Belgian television the last 24 hours of the live of Frances Newton on DR in Huntsville, Texas. This was a very emotional documentary, and I was touched by the calm era that Frances showed in her 24 last hours. Frances was sentenced to deathrow, alledged being accused to have shot her daughter of 20 months, her 7 years old son and here husband.
She was sentenced by the jury of the Harris County court. The DA was interviewed as well, and they asked him that he would not regard the new evidence that was found, and that could prove the innocence of Frances.
This man showed his pride of sending people in to their death, no matter if they where guilty or not, he said that he trusted the people (read jury) of Texas to have taken a decision and he respect this decision (can you believe it). He was never involved in this case, or never met Frances in real life, can you imagine this??????

This districht attorney has sended already 19 people in to their death, where as one of them was proved not guilty, at least 5 of them was it not proved that they where guilty, but the clemency appeals where denied. This guy, and the governor and of course Mr. Bush are real in favour of DP, sow they hold up to it, and decline every clemency request that comes in.
How can they sleep at night, knowing that they are sending innocent peoples in to their dead.

Frances was very calm, and did take her death as a relief. Till the last hour she said that she did not kill her family, but now that she would die that she would be reunited with her family, how sad is this???? It breaks my heart, it really does. A professor of Houston University did do some research on the case of Frances, together with his students, and they said to believe that her family where killed by a drugdealer and not by Frances. They have filed it for appeal and asked to re-open the trial, but it was declined.

I feel for Frances, and for the family of Frances, especially her mum, she did stand very brave by the death of her daughter.

When will this needles killing come to an end????? It seems to me that we are still in the stoneage instead of the 21th century.

What do other people think about this case, am I wrong here? Was I fooled or was this again a killing of "just another black women"???

That's good ole Texas for ya! i've read alot about death row inmates in texas, the conditions they are forced to live in is one story, i've seen too how the percentage of these inmates have been denied fair trials/re-trials and overall fair justice...all i can say is i feel you on this micky, its gone beyond 'sad'

Micky....Have you heard about a web site called...
National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty?
It is actively doing someting about the Death Penalty issue, (there 30th year Anniversary is this year, 2006). Which to me can only be a good thing, (my perception)
I have not watched the documentary you have spoken of about Frances, but i have watched and read many very sad cases. I do not have a full comprehension why the Death Penalty still exists today. After all it is the safety of society and it's people that need to be protected. You can achieve that outcome the very best and most cost effective way, by locking a person up for life without the possibility of parole. That is a proven fact.

It is sad many people have been murdered by the State at a time when technology and DNA testing was not available, but have later been found innocent when technology was introduced.

Unfortunately, this is how our 'justice system' works. Once you have been convicted of a crime, you are more or less doomed. The laws are skewed against the convicted. In the beginning, these laws were put into place to protect their victims and their families. However, in working with inmates on their cases, I have found that the 'powers that be' usually turn a deaf ear on anything that could prove their innocence. It's sad but true.

Another sad truth is that most inmates doing life sentences say that death would be better than wasting away in a prison cell. I hate to admit it, but I think I'd feel the same way in the same situation.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot we can do to change the system. Too few are willing to get involved and fight for laws to be repealed or to give inmates more rights under the law. I suppose that's because most do not know what it's like to live in those conditions, nor how serious it is. Society in general has been conditioned to believe that prisons are like spas, thinking they are getting some sort of 'vactation' at taxpayers' expense. When in reality we here at WAP know differently. Yet, how do we convince others of the nightmare that prison truly is?

Micky it seems to me also many times a serious subject is not the most popular post to relpy too.....but,,t he other post get numerous responses ,,, so much for that topic...

Tx is proud of the fact as far as I have seen in even giving second thought to a possible innocent on DP.. it amazes me ,,, and is tragic,,, one of many reasons I am against the DP,, I think lsowly but,, to late and not soon enough ,, TX is getting the drift that they are in the stoneages when it comes to the prisons and the DP here,,, need folks to state this to the Govenor and helpls even more if out side the states here ,,, put in there input that it is known in other countries too, about TX good ole boy mentality is out!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very interested to read this, but really, have nothing to say. I wish I could change the world but one person can only do a small amount.

I did watch a program in which her story was on there. It pulled at my heart and made me sad to watch her story because I did not feel that the evidence pointed to her at all. Unfortunately the DA wanted to hurry up and close out the case and she went down for it. That woman did go down to the last how saying she was innocent but that she wanted to be with her family again. I think it was a very sad case and watching that program and writing to a man on DR has opened my eyes to a lot and has gotten me researching and getting more involved.

Hi guys (and girls),

I thank your for your responses, they where very important to me, especially to know that there are other people how are on the smae level as i am when it comes to Death Penalties.
It makes me very sad, that there is nothing we can do to avoid these useless killings, and it breaks my heart to see that people in the USA are still be put down like a dog, and that people how are administrating this feel actually proud of their job, it goes behind all comprehension.

I would go crazy I guess when I would have been Frances mother, to see my daughter be killed behind a screening window to witness her death, I can't believe this is still ha

oeps,

that this is stll happening in a modern technology world. The guy hows perform the killing by injection, says that he even doessent know if the convicted is suffering yes or know, they don't know of the first of 3 drugs that they inject is putting the person to sleep, so they may suffer a very violent dead!!!!!

How frustrating.

Sorry I have to vent about this
