250 inmates hurt, 55 hospitalized after California prison riot

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- More than 250 inmates were injured in a riot that erupted overnight at the California Institution for Men in Chino, a spokesman said Sunday.

Fifty-five inmates were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries, said Lt. Mark Hargrove, prison spokesman.

None of the facility's employees was hurt in the melee, which broke out at about 8:20 p.m. Saturday at the Reception Center West facility, Hargrove said. Guards used pepper spray, "less lethal force, and lethal force options" to regain control by 7 a.m. Sunday, he said.

The scene of the violence was the medium-security housing facility with seven units, each of which houses about 200 inmates, he said.

According to the link news, no staff was injured, and no inmate died or suffered a crippling issue.

The cost of medical and property damage will be high.

Hard drugs and gangs are ruining country's and so many lives !!!

That's so typical for CA. It is always gang related. The CDC does not have control of their prisons.

It is unfortunate that the prison population is so far behind the Brown v Board of Education decision delivered May 17, 1954 that segregation was illegal for purposes of eduction.

59 years later the populace of prisons don't get that if they all get along then the prison system will be much easier to control?

What a shame that coming up on 6 decades that people just don't take one another as individuals and please don't lecture me on it's necessary in prison, it is not.

If we hope to have our pps return to outside the walls then they need to live in prison as we do outside the walls, respecting others and have others respect them.

Can you imagine politics in the office going to the level of violence that Chino experienced?

Tired of excusing our pps for what we (and if they get out ) have to deal with on a daily basis.

Sorry I mean't 55 years later.
