A teenaged boy has confessed to 13 murders in Brazil's southeastern state of Espirito Santo, the "Folha de Sao Paulo" newspaper reported Thursday.

The 14-year-old was arrested for drug trafficking Tuesday on the outskirts of the state's capital Vitoria.

On Wednesday, he confessed to having been a member of an international drug trafficking ring since he was 12 and killing 13people.

Brasil has an epidemic of homeless children and youth running the streets and getting into all kinds of trouble. Theft, prostitution, drug sales, and sometimes murder are how these children exist with no adult supervision in their lives. I’m not sure if this kid was an orphan but it’s possible he was. There is the Brasil we see on the surface that attracts tourists for its beautiful beaches and that side of it but unfortunately, there is a very stratified community of wealthy and poor. Very little to no middle class exists. Whether he's actually guilty of these murders is anyone's guess. He could be taking the rap for people higher up in the established drug hierarchical system or he might actually be guilty of these homicides.
