Two men in a one man cell
The Arizona State prison in Tucson has begun locking down its units. In a cell approximately 9'6"X7'6" two adult men are forced to live twenty four hours a day. Let me amend that. If they are allowed to work they may leave to do that for three hours on some days. If they receive their scheduled recreation times they may leave for two hours one to three days a week and they may leave for meals. That leaves a lot of hours in the day in a very small space. I know this is prison, I know it's not supposed to be fun and it isn't. People are sent to prison as punishment not to be punished further. Could this be a fire or safety hazard? One or two officers per three runs, fifteen rooms per run, two men per room, it seems like too many to evacuate if necessary when I do the math. The officers are stationed in a central area behind glass, would they hear a call for help in case of accident, injury or emergency? The doors are not electronically controlled each and every door must be opened individually by key. I believe this is not only unjust but cruel. I have written the governor and encourage you to do the same.

Just had to reply, In the UK I have been 3 up in a 1 man cell 23 1/2 hrs a day for months. In some UK prisons they were so old there was no in cell toilets or sinks, most prisons only got toilets in cells in the last 7 years. Only 1 shower a week.
Things are better now , but there are still 3 to a cell in some prisons.

I am from the UK and have spent months 3 in acell designed for 1 man. With no toilet, no sink and 1 shower a week. Its only in the last 7 yrs Britains jails have got toilets fitted in cell.

I'm also from the Uk but even though our prison conditions are bad they never quite cross over the line the way they do in USA. Human Rights is something which we consider far more than other countries - I mean no disrespect to anyone on this board - some of my best friends are American - I am just making an observation is all [smile]

I fear that 2 men to a one man cell is just the being. With budget cuts coming in every state more and more services to inmates cut. Our prison system will become a warehouse of people who we as a socity have judged unfit to be call human. so there is no human right violation for they are not human. They are just aminamls that walk up right. mikeinpa.

Two men in a small cell the size of a average restroom, now that is true rehabilitation. I know that states have money issues, but when people are treated like animals, then what surprise is it, when they get out and treat their fellow citizen as such (like animals). My Rant against OverSentencing.
