Re: SlyFox's post
I mentioned it elsewhere on this board that I beleive that everyone who chooses to write to someone in prison should first ask themselves why they are doing it - are they looking for a spouse, or a pen pal, or are they just trying to help someone feel a little less lonely during their months or years behind bars?
If you're doing it as a way to help others, then you shouldn't feel afraid. When I was a volunteer at the local children's hospital, sometimes I'd be placed in a room with a "1-1" patient - someone (usually a teen) who had, or was trying, to committ suicide.
There were moments that I felt a chill of fear go through me - what if I should be attacked by this person - but, I always believed that God knew I was only trying to help, and, if something did go wrong, God would help me through it. In the end, after 5 years, aside from a few minor incidents, nothing really bad happened.
When you write to someone, as mentioned before, you can give a secondary address - a P.O. Box is one, or your place of employment is another. If you choose to have mail sent to your place of employment, just be prepared to explain why you are receiving mail that is stamped "Mailed from a correctional facility" (a USPS requirement, I believe). I needed to do that where I work, and my employer and co-workers were very agreeable, and were interested in finding out more about my latest volunteer work.
Again, perhaps first asking yourself why you are here is the best place to start.
