| NEW YORK (AP) - New York City authorities say a teenager in a dispute with his mother was shot and killed by police officers when he charged at them with what they thought was a gun. It turned out to be a hair brush. Police spokesman Paul Browne says officers received a 911 call from the teen's mother yesterday evening. He says the 911 operator could hear the teen yelling in the background, claiming he had a gun. When officers arrived at the Bedford-Stuyvesant home, they could see the 18-year-old pacing around inside. The mother was outside. Police say the son began screaming from the window at his mother and officers before climbing out of the window and beginning to cross a sidewalk holding a black object in his hand. Browne says the officers ordered him to stop, but he refused and they opened fire, killing the teen. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. | These kind of cases are sad. When the police think people have guns or they cant tell and have to defend themselves. I saw another quite similar where a woman was nearly shot because she had failed to stop and then lured the police to her house. They were attempting to stop her for suspicion of DWI and she pulled out a cell phone in the middle of the night. Luckilly one of the officers caught it in the light and a tragedy was averted.

| Not just sad but, scary too. I feel for all in this, the officer and mother and most of all the teen. Heated argument turns to disaster.

| I guess compliance is really the key when dealing with cops. If they tell you not to move, you don’t move. If they tell you to drop an object, you drop the object. As far as I know, if they have heard that a suspect has a weapon (even before they have a visual on it) like when the person calls 911. If someone on the phone says a person is armed or has a weapon of any kind, they go to the scene assuming this is true. They need to. It doesn’t even matter if the suspect no longer has the object (or never had it) by the time they arrive. At that point they will take you down on your stomach and cuff from behind because that is the information they were given. I would like to say I don’t have personal experience with this situation, but I do unfortunately.

| I think sometimes, during a heated exchange of that nature, people just arent thinking straight and they actually dont hear the police tell them to drop a weapon or they might hear it physically but its not registering. Either way though, if you are told to stop and you dont listen, thats it.
