Supreme Court halts Georgia execution ATLANTA (AP) - The U.S. Supreme Court has granted a last-minute reprieve to a Georgia man less than two hours before he was to be executed for the 1989 shooting death of an off-duty Savannah police officer.
Supporters of Troy Davis say 7 of the nine witnesses who helped put Davis on death row recanted their testimony. Prosecutors say the witness statements are "suspect" and appeals courts in Georgia have refused to grant him a new trial.
