does anyone know if maps can be send to Huntsville, Tx.? I would like to send my PP something and dont know if he can receive a map.

maps are not allowed, they are considered contraband and the inmates can not have them

What if the map is in a book?

I had my local bookstore send my Penpal in Texas a couple of hardcover coffee-table type books with photographs, and one has a map on the inside cover. The TDCJ website says books are acceptable as long as they come from the retailer or wholesaler. I couldn't find anything specific about hardcover books or maps. They went into the mail about two weeks ago, so I should find out shortly if they were considered contraband.

If I printed off a recent low-level satellite image of the prison site from Google-Earth and mailed that I can understand why they might be upset............
But I can't see the harm in the books.

Dogged, The prison can refuse any book that they deem unsuitable even though the DOC says that books sent through a dealer are okay. By the way---you can't print a satellite low level image of a prison. It is blocked.

Maps are definately not acceptable in any prison,,, to high a risk to security...sorry ...........

Might even want to check rules for a Hardback book too hun! It all depends on what Level your friend is on as to whether he can have a hard back book or not!?!?!

Well normally I would have brought up a satellite image of a prison and tried to print it, just to try my damndest to prove you wrong. But having recently become aware of your elders status in this little community, I will defer to your accumulated years and wisdom and accept you at your word.

I haven't checked recently, but about a year ago I had a low level sat image of the Gatesville Texas area up on the screen. The quality was so good I could clearly see inmates in their white uniforms on the walkways between the buildings and working in the fields around several of the Units.

Yes, unfortunately maps are not allowed. The way the DOC sees it, the inmate could be planning an escape, and the maps used to plot his course.

Really though, while we think it's unfair, the DOC is only thinking of our safety. We see our friends on the inside as just that, friends who would never do us any harm. But sadly, the DOC feels if someone escaped, they would go to almost any lengths not to be recaptured, including doing bodily harm to us. And.....did you know that if someone were to escape, they would come looking for him or her at your house if you happen to be one who corresponded with them?
