Prisoners Left In flooded New Orleans Jail The New York Times is reporting today that as many as 600 prisoners were abandoned by their guards, and left locked up in jail cells that began to flood in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The prisoners had no food, water or electricity for 4 days, until they were found by rescuers, who saw fires that prisoners on upper levels had set to signal their whereabouts. It is not know how many died in the flooding. Prison officials say none, but prisoners say they saw bodies floating in the water as they were led out of the jail.
The prison authorities should be held accountable for this violation of basic human rights.
