Default Pals Overseas

How do you stay "connected" to a pal that you don't hear from often? It takes at least 6 business days for him to receive my letter and another 6 days for me to receive his reply. When I write him a letter and I don't receive a reply for over 12 days, I wonder if I'm ever going to hear from my pal again. I start to worry that my letter might have gotten lost, or that my pal has dropped me. It's like this rollercoaster that I'm not sure I want to stay on. Everytime I get his replies, I feel like I'm building up our friendship from scratch because the exchange takes so long.

I also think about the extra postage it costs him to mail my letters and wonder if he is better off just sticking to his local pals, with whom he can exchange letters with on a weekly basis, rather than biweekly.

Silver, i live in Australia and for me i NEVER only write letter for letter. I sit and talk to my friends often, and we have several letters in the mail at one time. Only my friend from Africa is different with mail for obvious reasons. I know he doesn't have the ability to write me as my other friends do, but i still make sure i write him at least once a week. Maybe you could try writing more?

I don't worry about the postage costs for them to be honest as such, because i don't see it as a negative. Although i know for them they will happily spend a days wage just for the cost of ONE letter sent to me.

My pal on DR has no income. I have the ability to send money so i do. Some have said they will not pay for someone to write them, but i don't pay to receive letters. I don't view it like that, and i know from the contents of my letters the value i hold as a true friend. I see i have the ability to give, so i give, be that financial or just emotional. One friend i have been writing to for nearly a year has been adamant i not send him money, he is a proud man and will find a way. I know during Ramadan he traded his food for stamps and paper. They will find a way to write you if you are a priority to them, so don't worry. Their are some amazing people behind the walls, and like us will do what it takes to keep the friendship alive. Some sell art works, most have the ability to trade for paper and a stamp or two.....Don't stress....

I do the same with my special pal - we decided to write once a week and have our letters cross in the mail - that way we don't have to wait very long for a letter from each other. My other 3 pals only write once a month though, and I agree, sometimes I do wonder if my letter has gotton lost and they think I've stopped writing to them...

Some letters just take six days overseas, but there are letters what take weeks. We write daily, so lots of times the letters are mixed up. We write daily what we did, what we see, think etc. So it isnt a problem.

Maybe the mail is just slow or he is out of stamps, paper or enveloppes. Im sure there is a good reason.

The last "letter" I wrote was mailed out on 10/15 and it has never taken this long for my pal to write back. Since then, I've also sent out a Halloween card and two short letters with 10-page book reviews/lists attached. The first one definitely should have reached my pal so I'm getting antsy to receive a reply. Perhaps, I should follow in everyone's footsteps and get more penpals.
