I write to someone who is in the S.H.U. All my letters are scanned - what means in this case someone in the mail room reads them and looks for special phrases. The letters my pp sends are also scanned. I'm not sure, but I guess they also make copies of them.
Yes, he is one of the bad bad bad boys, I can't help it.
The letters I send to my other pp's will be opened by the mail room staff. But usually they just look for pictures (x-rated is not allolwed ) or money orders and stamps. The mail room staff has just not enough time to read each letter. How deep your letters are scanned depends on who you write. Someone in Ag seg or S.H.U. is more watched than someone in a "normal" prison section.

mail out of a prison is less likely to be eye scanned than the mail coming into an institution. I get all sorts of things from inmates that I would never be aloowed to send in.

Pelican Bay and places like it ye Ad MAX in Florence CO along with sections of TDCJ prisons like Polunsky and Estelle come to mind . They hpuse gang members and other "security threats " So it would make sense that all mail in and out going is read completely and then some .

Most other place will read know STG and other troublemakers and know escape artists mail but for the most part they simply scan the mail for contraband and certain worlds or more likely phrase orv the way a letter is written also art work can be used to pass messages so that too is scanned of not gone over by a STG guard .

How carefully you mail both in and out going is looked at depend on who you are writing to their "classification" and the security level of their prison or the part of the prison they are in a "trusty" will probably be very briefly looked at if they get to and who who is sending the mail .A "Trusty" might just have thier mail check for contraband contraband as opposed to some on e in Ad seg who might have their mail read or at least checked by the bosses in ad seg .
Hope this helps expail things and why it can seem confusing

Yes, thank you very much ASE, it's very clear.

My confusion was due to the fact that I am not a native speaker of English and therefore was wondering what "scan" would mean spontaneously to a native.

But I even got the explanation for our special context in which the word is used, so I'm perfectly clear now, THANKS Y'ALL !

Hello

I also write to pelican bay Shu and it is stamped all over however he openly writes about past involvement with gangs, drugs etc. So not sure they actually read it. He writes half english half spanish.

I am always careful about what i write back. I dont really worry about them reading my letters as i always keep them upbeat, funny and positive, if anything they have a laugh at my expense at the silly things i say.

I am stressed about not getting letters though. lol. where are my photos its really doing my head in i have been down every day and have told myself not to go till wednesday. lol.

Maybe we have a little bonus, because we write from oversea. I don't think someone could imagine we are involved in any gang-related things going on there. But the stamps are getting on my nerves. Sometimes it is really hard to decode what my pp writes, because the stamps are always exactly on the important words. Seems like someone wants to annoy me.
My pp is still involved in some "affairs", so he told me he is a little cautious with the things he writes because he wants me to stay out of trouble and doesn't want to lose the mail privileges. If they read my letters or not, who carres? ... I guess I read on the website of the Department of California that they have the right to make copies, but I'm not sure. Mypp gave me also a hint to this. I don't care at all. I always stay positive, funny and sometimes a little bit silly. If the mail room staff laugh about my letters ... good! Maybe a good laugh can make them propitiate with me and my pp.

That is not the case for me, or at least, I don't know about it... And I think I'd rather not. The less you know, the less likely you are to write something "out of line". I would sooo HATE to loose my mail priviledges...

Oh, I would never ask, and he would never tell me about it. And it is good this way. I would also hate to lose mail priviledge. He told me why he is in the shu, that's all. We hold our correspondence clean of everything that could cause trouble for him. Sometimes it is difficult, but I try to stay focused on the funny things in life and to make him laugh with my letters. That's my job (just kidding).
