Ted Koppel was on the Today Show this morning re his new book regarding the California Prison; its overcrowding, the terrible conditions, etc. He was stating that basically all prisons have problems but that he began with CA because of the serious overcrowding. I may have these figures wrong but I thought he said that the prisons in CA were built to house 100,000 inmates and currently they are housing 170,000.

I was glad to hear that someone of his caliber would tackle the subject.

Yes, it is going to be crazy in CA. My CA pp is in a prison with 6.000 prisoners...it has been built for 2.000.
When mail arrives at the prison it may take 10 to 20 days before it is given to him due to that there are so many prisoners there.

This has situation has strong impact on all living conditions...tension arise...violence...health conditions...

California prisons are so overcrowded that you have what basically amounts to small cities inside these places with COs being the only law enforcement. They are greatly overworked and outnumbered by the inmates.

California prisons are overcrowded as are ALL the institutions in the U.S. - Prisons are multi-billion dollar industries and more and more will be built rather than the government actively putting limits on Sentencing Guidelines & offering appropriate programs to the inmates so that the revolving door doesn't continue. This is nothing more than "Human Warehousing"!
