The ‘lucky’ house The ‘lucky’ house
It had been raining for days and the only thing the town had to protect them from flooding was a makeshift dam in the valley. The rain didn’t let up infact it got harder and finally the dam broke. A huge wall of water went crashing through the villages destroying everything in its path, trees and houses along with many lives.
There was one house on the side of a steep bank in a village called Middleworth it was directly in the path of that wall of water. Amazingly the flood had wiped out every house before this one and every house behind it. For some unknown reason, the house remained untouched.
The survivors rebuilt the dam and make it stronger hoping that history would never repeat itself.
In 1900 my great aunt moved into that house. A few years later it was decided to move the house further back against the steep bank because a lot of work was taking place to lay new paths and roads in the area.
In 1930 the dam broke again. As before the flood wiped out everything, but this time its path was across the spot where the old house resided for the first flood. Again it left her house untouched and this really spooked the town.
Today the place belongs to me, we haven’t had any flooding in this area for many years and everything is well protected but I still wonder what protected this house from the deadly walls of water. Some say it was down to fate and you’ve got to admit it’s a pretty amazing story.
